So it is. Therefore, application and the like cause it to digest and ripen. Undigested medicine does not perform its function. The so-called five types of phlegm are: Supporting Phlegm, Digesting Phlegm, Experiencing Phlegm, Nourishing Phlegm, and Connecting Phlegm, divided into five types. The five types of phlegm reside in the chest, supporting the three junctions with their own strength, as well as the power of the heart and food, and staying there to perform the function of water. Phlegm is the abode of the remaining four types of phlegm, and because it performs such a function, it is called Supporting Phlegm. That is, the phlegm located in the chest supports the junction of the two arms and the neck, called the "three junctions," with its own strength or ability, and generates the ability for its own operation, so it is called Supporting Phlegm. Similarly, the heart absorbs the power of food, supporting it in the form of essence, and exists with its own strength. Similarly, it stays in the chest and performs the function of water, performing the functions of moistening and filling with water. Phlegm becomes the abode of the remaining four types of phlegm and provides support, because it performs such a function, it is therefore called Supporting Phlegm. Whatever is located in the place of non-digestion, it can rot the collection of food, so it is called the Digester. That is, the phlegm itself is located in the place of non-digestion, and it rots the collection of food, making the accumulation of food soft, so it is called Digesting Phlegm. Experiencing Phlegm is located on the tongue and can experience taste. That is, Experiencing Phlegm is located on the tongue and can experience taste well, and can understand, so it is called Experiencing Phlegm. Nourishing Phlegm is located in the head and can make the senses feel satisfied. That is, Nourishing Phlegm is located in the head and can make the senses such as the eyes feel satisfied and nourished, so it is called Nourishing Phlegm. Connecting Phlegm is located in the joints and can connect them. That is, Connecting Phlegm is located in the joints of the limbs and can connect the joints, so it is called Connecting Phlegm. Thus, in order to distinguish and explain the abode and operation of diseases, and in order to summarize, it is said: Thus, diseases, etc.

This is generally the case. Although the unchanging nature pervades, it should be known that it is the place, and the activities are also different. This is to say that, as just mentioned, most diseases such as wind have an unchanging nature, and as stated in the treatise, they abide with their own measure, without inequality, pervading and running throughout the entire body, but it should be known and understood that they are each their own place. Not only the place, but also their activities should be known to be different. Although each of the winds and so on are divided into five types, because the nature of roughness and oiliness disappears, therefore, relying on the same qualities of matter, those diseases will increase and develop. Relying on the qualities of matter that are inconsistent with their own characteristics will pacify them. Here, there is no need to rely on anything else, everything increases because of the same qualities, and pacifies because of inconsistency. Therefore, the author said this: Roughness and so on have warmth, and the wind will increase. Coldness can make it rise, oiliness and so on, having warmth will pacify. This is to say that the qualities of roughness and so on, namely roughness, coldness, subtlety, and movement, if they have warmth, and become the antidote to wind, having qualities inconsistent with it, then wind disease will increase and develop. Merely having the general characteristics of the qualities of wind, such as roughness, although they are the cause of wind increasing and developing, but not only that, having warmth, becoming the antidote to wind, such as roughness, will also increase the wind. Furthermore, the qualities of wind such as roughness, together with wind, having the quality of coldness, because it is in accordance with itself, it can make the wind rise. The qualities of oiliness and so on, namely oiliness, heaviness, subtlety, coarseness, and stability, have heat
