I carefully examine the subtle aspects, and similarly, by the power of observing the best and the excellent, and by the power of the needs of taste and aftertaste, the differences of these are countless. Therefore, in order to explain these, I say: Those differences of taste and aftertaste, distinguished from the best and the excellent, from which arise numbers beyond calculation, should be appropriately combined according to the conditions of disease and medicine. That is to say, those distinguished by the differences of sixty-three kinds of numbers are beyond calculation, because they are so many that they cannot be counted, and have arisen. How is that? From the difference of taste and aftertaste, therefore, from the collection of elements, the taste of medicines is not singular. This is said because the two, taste and aftertaste, are also like this, for example, the aftertaste of sweetness is sourness, etc., the aftertaste of sourness is sweetness, etc., similarly, sourness is saltiness, etc., saltiness is bitterness, etc. Although the word "those" encompasses everything, if the fifty-seven are appropriately distinguished by taste and aftertaste, they will become countless. Who can prevent the six tastes alone from becoming countless through the observation of the best and the excellent, etc.? Therefore, it is said that observation is made from the best and the excellent. The difference between mixed and unmixed tastes, observation is made in the best and the excellent, for example, sweet, very sweet, extremely sweet, slightly sweet, slightly very sweet, slightly extremely sweet, and similarly, it should be applied to other tastes as well. Furthermore, those differences of taste should be appropriately combined according to the conditions of disease and medicine. Among them, disease refers to wind, etc., and medicine refers to haritaki, etc. Is the sweetness of disease and medicine for that purpose? Is it by its power? Is it dependent on it? It should be fully observed and combined by its power. It is not to be mixed randomly, that is its meaning. It should be known that mentioning disease and medicine is only an approximate representation. The treatise called "Essence of Eight Limbs Explained: Moonlight on the Meaning of Words" was written by the student, Delight in the Moon.
