Among those things, that which abides in medicine with the nature of having power, that kind of medicine greatly suppresses and defeats other weaker medicines, and abides comfortably, and those things that are done become the cause, and accomplish what should be accomplished. For example, the taste did this, the potency did this, the power did this, and so on. This meaning is exemplified, and the explanation from brief to extensive is shown here. Whatever belongs to the category of taste, etc., abides with power over other tastes, and immediately suppresses them and becomes the cause of accomplishment. Because it abides in its own and others' power, having power and being weak, and each acts in both ways. Therefore, to show this, it is said: "Incompatible qualities combined, the many suppress the few." That is, because incompatible qualities are combined and mixed, the many, having power, suppress and conquer the few. Here, the term "incompatible qualities" refers to the combination of incompatible substances. It should not be said that it is the incompatible qualities themselves. As the sage Charaka said, a combination is the mixing of two or more substances, and there are two kinds of incompatibility: incompatibility of nature and incompatibility of result. Incompatibility of nature is, for example, mixing light and heavy medicines, mixing cold and hot, and so on. Incompatibility of result is, for example, to eliminate wind disease, mixing rough medicines and tastes together, and similarly mixing cold and hot together, and so on. Thus, the combination of medicines with incompatible qualities by nature, and similarly the combination of medicines with incompatible results, these combinations of mutually dissimilar kinds, it is seen that when the kind of food is few and the kind of substance is many, they suppress and abide in becoming the cause of accomplishment. For example, honey, although sweet, pacifies phlegm. Sweet taste
