Due to the power of (medicines), all things are medicine. Regarding the statement, "Medicines that move upwards are mostly fire and wind," among those types of medicines, what causes medicines to move upwards and flow upwards is, so-called "mostly," meaning that the majority is composed of fire and wind, which is the nature of fire and wind. This is because what moves upwards is fire, and what is light is wind, and it should be understood in this way. Regarding the statement, "Those that move downwards are mostly, the qualities of earth and water are mostly," the nature of medicines that move downwards and flow downwards, thereby acting as a purgative, is that the components of earth and water are abundant, because the two are heavy, and water flows downwards. Thus, it is medicine. Regarding the statement, "Thus, medicine," the word "thus" means complete and whole, meaning that everything that should be said about medicine has been completely said. For medicines with mixed properties, and medicines that equally eliminate diseases of the upper and lower parts of the body, since they can be understood through the meanings previously explained separately, to avoid excessive text, they are not explained here as in other medical texts. Having explained medicine in this way, next, we will briefly explain the sweetness, etc., that depend on medicine, that is: The differences in taste, will be explained below. It means that the differences in taste, determined to be sixty-three types, will be explained and elucidated in the chapter "Different Tastes" through writing and establishing the text. Here, because there are many things to say, it is not explained in detail. Now, we begin to write about the efficacy of medicines, that is: Regarding the explanation of the power of medicines, there are heaviness, oiliness, coolness, and gentleness, as well as lightness, roughness, heat, and sharpness, and it is considered that there are eight types in this way. Regarding this statement, the power of medicine refers to the unobstructed and uncontacted movement in all things. Therefore, any medicine that possesses some kind of virtue is called power or efficacy. Regarding this, other teachers say: The power of medicine refers to the classification of virtues such as heaviness, explained as eight types. Teachers consider that these eight forms are the forms of numbers.

It should be explained. Other schools hold that the definition of terms is different. Regarding medicinal power, Caraka said: By what does one do what, if not by medicinal power, nothing is accomplished, all these are accomplished by medicinal power. To this, the righteous Caraka explained and elucidated the medicinal power or efficacy of medicine, that is, the nature of what any substance does, what it participates in, and what it accomplishes, is its medicinal power, as said by the noble righteous Caraka. By the words "what is done by medicinal power, what is done," efficacy is medicinal power, and taste is also medicinal power, and similarly, whatever qualities depend on the medicine, such as heaviness, etc., all are called the medicinal power of that medicine, and medicinal power arises from not being separate from efficacy itself. In general, scholars have different views on the medicinal power of medicine. Some scholars consider the eight qualities such as heaviness to be medicinal power, and they consider only special qualities to be medicinal power, and do not consider small efficacy to be medicinal power. If small efficacy is considered medicinal power, then the small parts of the eight qualities such as heaviness would exist in all things, which is unreasonable. Therefore, the eight qualities such as heaviness, which have special efficacy, are called medicinal power. Therefore, the qualities are those eight. That is to say, what is done by what combination, that is the efficacy of that substance. In this way, the righteous Caraka believes that any qualities that any medicine has are unrelated to the medicinal power of that medicine, because without medicinal power, that substance cannot do anything, nor can it accomplish anything. Therefore, all these actions are accomplished by medicinal power, and can accomplish efficacy. If all actions are medicinal power, then why are only the eight qualities such as heaviness called medicinal power? Why are qualities such as taste not called medicinal power? Because they also perform actions. Therefore, it is said: Therefore, heaviness and so on themselves, possessing special efficacy, and being the essence of all qualities, are called medicinal power, which is a naming that is in accordance with reality.
