It should be protected like guarding a container filled with young eggs or butter. In this way, for a patient who is ill from washing the body, first give sweet and pleasing food. After that, give food mixed with sour and salty tastes. After that, give food mixed with sweet and astringent tastes. After that, give food mixed with astringent and spicy tastes. In this way, give various tastes that are different from each other, just like oily and rough. By arranging the treatment in this order, the body should be restored to its normal state. The so-called body restored to its normal state means that all parts of the body are full of energy, and the energy and strength are consolidated, which is called the natural body. From the place where the ritual is completed, the fifth chapter on how the physician uses rituals to cure diseases is finished. Next, the chapter on the ritual of medicine will be explained. First, from what kind of place should the physician collect medicine? It should be collected from places where the temperature is moderate, the land is flat, and the soil is oily in color, appearing black or golden. Among these places, one should choose places where the land is clean and soft, where water flows to the right, where kusha grass and Bhutika and other plants grow, and plants that grow from land that has been plowed by plows and other tools. One should avoid plants that have been harmed by the shade of large trees, as well as those that grow in cemeteries, stupas, temples, near old stupas, and in ant nests. Similarly, one should avoid those that have been eaten by insects, scorched by the sun, grown in forest fires, grown under trees inhabited by spirits, those that have been soaked by water dripping from the leaves and branches of large trees, and medicines that have been exposed to the poison of sunlight dripping from tree leaves. Such things should be avoided. It is best to collect medicines with large roots pointing north, and crush them according to the season. It is best to collect those with color and odor and other characteristics. Then, the physician himself should bathe, cleanse, fast, recite auspicious rituals, and with great respect, understand the essence, qualities, and seasonal differences of medicines that grow in auspicious places. It is best to collect and use fresh medicines that are less than one year old.
