In terms of food, give porridge and other foods that are compatible with medicine. For colds that are phlegm-like in nature, do not feed porridge or similar things. Just as rain falling on sweat turns into mud, it will increase phlegm. Therefore, for colds caused by phlegm, fasting initially is a good sign. At first, do not feed porridge or similar things, but give soybeans, mung beans, chickpeas, and light, thin soups made from mung beans, without oil, with bitter medicine, in moderation and with salt. For food, old red rice and sixty-day rice are beneficial. For colds with excessive phlegm, in a medicinal decoction with the power to eliminate phlegm, add the red rice mentioned above, or wash hulled barley two or three times and make rice or barley porridge according to the condition. Mung beans, lentils, soybeans, and other light, thin soups, whichever the patient is accustomed to drinking, can eliminate colds. For vegetables, choose bitter gourd, eggplant, young radish, parpata, bardaka, neem, safflower, bitter gourd fruit and leaves, etc., whatever is available. For meat broth, choose light meats, and meat broth from animals living in dry places, such as roasted meats, add kantakari, parushaka, agnimantha, grapes, amla, apple seeds, pippali, turmeric, calamus, cumin, ginger salt, etc., as well as white sugar and honey. These can be without oil, but should be well prepared and given. What is added to the vegetables is yogurt that is not too sour, in moderation, boiled over low heat, and given after the meal. Alternatively, drink the filtered water from the medicinal decoction. If accustomed to alcohol, wine can be fed. Whether the cold is cured or not, at sunset, when phlegm is reduced and the heat of fire is great, light food can be eaten. Alternatively, eat food according to the condition, i.e., phlegm in the morning, bile at noon, and air in the afternoon. If the patient has weak digestive fire, giving food in the morning will cause the disease to relapse.

Furthermore, medicinal decoctions and beneficial foods can lighten the body. If there is an excess of phlegm and low digestive fire, and an excess of bile and wind, then administer ghee for ten days or more. For a ripened epidemic, administering ghee is like nectar. If it is not ripened, even if it has been more than ten days, it will generate various faults such as phlegm and loss of appetite. For an epidemic with an excess of phlegm, first exhaust the phlegm with fasting and bitter medicinal decoctions, etc. In order to increase bodily nourishment and strength, protect against old epidemics. Because the fiery nature of bile ripens by avoiding roughness and moisture, if bile arises from this, then make the body rougher with steam-boiled water, astringent tastes, and light foods, thereby disturbing the strong wind. Ghee is most beneficial for this, like extinguishing a fire burning inside the stomach with water. Ghee is the best for eliminating wind and bile. If mixed with medicines that are compatible with each, it is beneficial for all diseases. If ghee is mixed with cooling medicines, it subdues hot epidemics; if mixed with warming medicines, it eliminates cold epidemics; if mixed with rough medicines, it pacifies phlegm. Therefore, the above-mentioned hair and rhododendron boiled soup, etc., should be mixed appropriately with medicinal ghee that is compatible with each disease and administered. Three fruits, neem bark, licorice, Brihati (Solanum indicum) and Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) one ounce each, small cardamom one ounce, boil these and add half an ounce of ghee and drink, it is beneficial for epidemics and phlegm, so say the old doctors. Long pepper, false hellebore, and Dhavani (Woodfordia fruticosa), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Putrajeevaka, ashes, Amla (Emblica officinalis), Tamalaka, Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Rhododendron, Sandalwood, Palani (Evolvulus alsinoides), Puseltsi, Grapes, White Bringaraj, Salaparni (Desmodium gangeticum), boil these together with ghee and four times the amount of water as ghee, and drink appropriately, it is beneficial for epidemics and imbalance of digestive fire, Halimaka disease, loss of appetite, excessive heat, meat worms, vomiting, rib pain, and headache.
