Due to rituals causing the body to become emaciated, prolonged travel leading to physical depletion, engaging in excessive talking, overindulgence in women, fasting or not eating causing thinness, and practices such as asceticism, the body becomes thin and withered. Like young children and the elderly, if one frequently drinks a large amount of milk, it is as beneficial as nectar. Therefore, in summary, regularly drinking milk is like food, possessing strength and merit. Consuming milk regularly will not cause discomfort between the two. Mixing and drinking foods of different consistencies, such as light and heavy, soft and rough, is even better. Drinking milk after a meal makes one feel full and satisfied in the abdomen, improves complexion, and nourishes the entire body, making it strong and firm. Drinking beverages after consuming all foods softens and digests them easily. Furthermore, excessive consumption of beverages can lead to adverse effects such as pain above the neck, in the eyes, nose, ears, tongue, brain, and vomit, as well as physical discomfort, coughing, lung rupture with bleeding, catching a cold, singing excessively, and hoarseness from talking too much. Overconsumption of milk can be harmful. Additionally, drinking beverages is not advisable if the body has pus, diabetes, eye pain, armpit pain, or injuries. After eating and drinking, engaging in vigorous and loud talking, walking on the road, sleeping during the day, sunbathing, warming oneself by the fire, riding a horse and running, swimming, or running on foot are all inappropriate. The phrase "the time to eat has arrived" refers to when one has eliminated urine and feces, the heart and abdomen are clean and free of odor, and one feels relaxed. Wind, bile, and phlegm are also in their respective balanced states. Burping occurs naturally. Exhaling downwards also flows smoothly. Saliva is moderate. The temperature in the abdomen is also higher. The senses, such as the eyes, are also clear. The body also feels very light. At that time, it is the time to eat. Eating should also be combined with the ritual of food, eating in moderation, which is what is called the time to eat.

The eighth chapter of gTan bstan is completed. The tastes of various medicines, their potency, the after-taste of digestion, their virtues, the specific effects of medicines, the classification of medicines according to the nature of the five great elements, their beneficial actions through the power of the five great elements, and the explanation of various kinds of medicines. Since the different tastes of medicines and so on appear depending on the medicines themselves, medicines themselves are the most supreme. That medicine is also of the nature of the five great elements, as it grows relying on the earth. That growth also requires the presence and combination of fire, water, wind, and space, and because it grows relying on the earth, that medicine is of the nature of the five great elements. All medicines are similar in that they possess the nature of the five great elements, and although they contain elements of all six tastes, such as sweet and bitter, some have a greater proportion of bitterness, and some have a greater proportion of sweetness. Therefore, the differences in the potency and virtues of medicines are mostly explained separately. Therefore, medicines that arise from the five great elements do not have a single taste. Thus, the causes of diseases, such as those caused by wind, phlegm, and bile, are not just one kind. Therefore, how the taste of a medicine is, and how the taste is clearly distinguished, is called the taste of the medicine. How the taste of a medicine is immediately, without distinction, and the taste that is gradually distinguished after tasting, is called the final taste, and slightly tasting the taste at the end is called difference. The virtues of medicines, such as being difficult to digest, reside in the earth and so on, while the tastes of medicines depend on the medicines themselves. Therefore, although the main thing is the medicine itself, it is not specifically mentioned, but is commonly and equally named, and referred to as the taste of the medicine. The substance of medicine, which has the nature of the five great elements, can be viewed in two ways: as the nature and as the characteristic of action. Among them, the medicine with a greater proportion of the nature of earth is: heavy, coarse, hard, and has a strong odor, and possessing these virtues belongs to the nature of earth. The action of the earth element of medicine is: to make it heavy, to make it hard and stable, and to make it increase.
