Seeing the work of preparing and administering medicine, not being lazy or idle, but being diligent. Being very clean with external washing and medicine preparation, and having a pure mind without excessive greed and with compassion, this is the virtue of a doctor. Also, medicine needs to have four virtues: the various medicines, each with its own digging and drying, etc., are done according to their respective rituals; each medicine also has virtues such as efficacy and power; when the medicine grows, it has not suffered from heavy rain or severe drought, nor has it been severely damaged by sunlight and shade, growing from good soil, each possessing mature characteristics, being specific to different diseases; and having specific benefits for suitable medicines. These four are the virtues of medicine. The virtues of nursing the sick are also fourfold: being kind to the patient, being clean inside and out, being patient and diligent in care, and regarding the patient's illness, according to the doctor's instructions on the suitability of food, etc., not forgetting, not confusing, and being skilled. The patient also needs to have four virtues to be cured: having the means for treatment, that is, being wealthy; listening to the doctor's diagnosis and being at peace of mind; the patient knowing where they are uncomfortable; and after taking medicine and treatment, having obvious effects and being strong. In this way, having these sixteen elements of medicine, treating diseases, etc., and becoming healthy and long-lived, etc., everything can be achieved. When a doctor treats a patient, the patient who is easy to cure is: being of prime age, being able to withstand all medical procedures, and being able to endure. A person with these two conditions, who can follow the rules of medication, abstain from unsuitable foods, can control the senses and can endure, such a patient is easy to treat. Also, treating a patient's illness, being of prime age and able to withstand treatment, but if the disease has developed to a serious degree, or the condition is severe, etc., it is difficult to treat. The patient is of prime age and has the conditions to withstand treatment, etc., but the disease has not developed to a serious degree, the condition is mild, and the site of the disease is not obvious, but only slightly shows signs of having a certain disease?

Clearly understanding the characteristics of what constitutes the target of a disease, and if any disease, such as plague, is not superimposed by other minor secondary diseases, then it is not harmful, but easy to treat. Furthermore, if a patient is ill and feels unwell, it may be due to factors such as the person's nature, the seasons of summer and winter, dry land, large hail, and other harmful elements. All uncomfortable diseases are not exactly the same, but are different, as mentioned above. Diseases like this, which possess sixteen branches of medical treatment, are easy to treat. Furthermore, if one is to examine a person afflicted by disease, it should be combined with the person's natal star and day of the week at the time of birth. If the day of initial affliction does not harm the natal star, and the disease is not compounded by two symptoms, but only one disease, or if blood comes from the mouth, or also comes from below, like this, blood coming from both orifices, or if blood comes from all places such as the mouth and nose, these are difficult to treat. If it is not compounded in this way, but only blood comes from the mouth or some part, and the core of the disease is not large, this is called easy to treat. Among these, what is called difficult to treat internal medicine is: performing various bloodletting therapies, using aquatic leeches to suck diseased blood, applying medicine made from barley husk ash, and being afflicted by diseases compounded by two symptoms, these diseases are difficult to treat. It can only be controlled by the help of medicine and food, and it affects lifespan, such a disease is called difficult to treat. Unlike the previously shown targets of easy to treat and difficult to treat, the disease itself is also severe, and the symptoms of the disease are also superimposed, medicine and food cannot be cooked and changed, the lifespan is also uncertain, and it is extremely incompatible with all treatments, the mind also becomes confused, desiring all uncomfortable and harmful things, such as wanting to see relatives or friends, or becoming foolish, not remembering things, being drunk and not speaking, forgetting desires, becoming angry, towards doctors, nurses, and treatments.
