It generates hot diseases that increase bile and blood. The differences in medicine are viewed in three ways: some pacify internally, some aggravate the disease, and the ordinary ones remain in a normal state. Furthermore, the power of medicine is twofold: the qualities of heat and coolness. The aftertaste of medicine after digestion is threefold: sweet, sour, and hot in nature. The qualities of medicine are tenfold: heavy, rough, cool, oily, soft, astringent, smooth, stable, extremely subtle, and dry. If reversed from this, it is combined into twenty. The distinction in curing diseases lies in the difference between summer and winter, the difference in medicine, and expertise in the work of compounding and administering medicine. Combining and separately applying these three is the sole cause of preventing disease, and it is supreme. If these three aspects are not attained, or if they are compounded too little or incorrectly, or if they are compounded excessively, there is danger of disease, and it should be recognized as disease. What is called disease is when wind, bile, and phlegm are not in balance, it transforms into disease. What is called absence of disease is when the basis of wind, bile, and phlegm is healthy and balanced, it is the nature of being without disease. What is called disease is, in short, of two kinds: one is the disease of hunger and thirst, which is constant and exists by nature. The other is what appears immediately, and what becomes disease from being unsuitable and unbalanced is a sudden disease, and these are the two kinds. These two diseases should also be understood in two ways, according to the difference between body and mind, in all states of disease. Among them, attachment and ignorance are of the mind, and these two are shown as the basis of disease. The method of examining disease is threefold: observation, touching by feeling with the hand, and questioning about the disease, and examination is done through these three. Examining the patient's disease is also fivefold: first, examining the previous unsuitable food that became the cause of the disease, after eating light or heavy food; second, understanding from the condition of what the disease is; third, understanding the characteristic of what the substance of the disease is; fourth, the disease becomes aggravated because of eating food, etc., that causes disease; fifth, clearly recognizing the disease and distinguishing what the name of the disease is; like this.

The conditions of earth-related diseases should be understood. Furthermore, there are two ways to diagnose diseases: one is based on the differences in geographical areas, and the other is based on the differences in the body. These two aspects need to be observed repeatedly. Among them, geographical differences refer to places where water and trees are scarce, mountains are few and dry land is abundant, and where there are many bones and strong winds. In such places, wind-related diseases are particularly severe and can transform into blood-related diseases. Areas that are generally yellowish, with abundant water and many mountains, and lacking trees, are prone to severe phlegm-related diseases, which can also transform into wind-related diseases. When dry and moist lands are equally proportioned and in a common state, diseases such as wind, phlegm, and bile will also be very balanced. Therefore, the method of observing diseases from a geographical perspective is divided into three types. There are also two methods for doctors to prescribe medicine based on the difficulty of treating the disease: one is based on the duration of the disease, from a brief moment to years and months, and the other is based on the severity of the sudden onset of the disease. Doctors should prescribe medicine based on these considerations. There are also two main ways for doctors to administer medicine: one is to guide upwards, starting with emetics and other methods, to cleanse and purify; and the other is to use medicines that can pacify the disease. For diseases arising from the body, treating them sequentially is the best method, first using medicines that can activate the effect of other medicines, then using purgatives, then using emetics, and then using sesame oil and medicinal oils, as well as honey, to nourish and treat. The method of treating mental illnesses is to have wisdom and a stable mind, and to maintain happiness. If one feels unhappy and agitated due to being despised by others, one should think rationally according to one's own abilities and circumstances to treat mental illnesses. This is the best method for treating mental illnesses. There are four main methods for prescribing medicine and treating diseases: doctor, medicine, caregiver, and patient. Each of these four main factors in treating diseases contains four elements, and when these sixteen elements are present, all medical practices, including disease treatment, can be performed. Among them, possessing four virtues is what makes a doctor, what are these four virtues? A great doctor is proficient in medicine, follows medical principles, and is a support for all. Able to explain the fundamentals of medicine and proficient in medical theory.
