Tapana is the afflictor, that is, the one afflicted by hot rays. Savitā is the one with rays, the one whose action is to emit rays. Ḍavi is the one with a luminous form, because it has light for rūpa, hence it is a suffix with 'i'. Thus, there are thirty-seven names for the sun. Regarding the names of the sun's retinue, the twelve gods, including Indra, reside on this surface (of the sun), and the chief among them is called the Abider. On the left side of the sun, Indra is in the form of a club. On the right side is the fire god, with a reddish-yellow color. At the southern gate of the second level, Yama is named Māṭhara Abider, because he dwells near the sun like clothing. On the other surfaces of the gate, Caṇḍāṃśu (fierce ray) and Paripārśvakāya (completely surrounding) exist. With half a verse, the name of the sun's charioteer, the legless one, is explained: Sūrasūta is the charioteer of the sun. Aruṇa is dawn, because he goes by becoming reddish-white. Anūru is legless, because this charioteer's limbs are incomplete. Kāśyapi is the lineage of light protectors, because they are descendants of the sage Kāśyapa. To Kāśyapa, the suffix 'i' of descendants is added from Ata. Garuḍāgraja is the firstborn of the Garuḍa, because this dawn is born before the Garuḍa, as has already been told in the previous history of the taming mother. With half a verse, the names of the sun's mandala are explained: Pariviśa (completely surrounding) is completely encircling, Paridhi (completely encircling) is completely encircling or the sun encircling, Upasūryaka is near the sun, Mandala is the mandala... it is always near the sun. Regarding the general names for the rays of the sun, etc., there are two verses: Kiraṇa (ray) is a ray, because it destroys dimness, hence 'kṛ' (to do) is added with the suffix 'kya'. Uṣaḥ (illumination) is the illuminator, because light dwells, hence 'vasa' (to dwell) is added with the suffix 'ra' and 'yaṇa' 'i'. Māyukha (measuring goer) is the measuring goer, because 'mā' (to measure) means to measure, and 'ukhi' means to go, added with the suffix 'aca', and transformed into Māyukha by Pṛṣodara, etc. Aṃśu (direction goer) is the direction goer, because 'am' (disease) means disease, added with the suffix 'ku' and 'śuk' āgama, meaning to go towards the direction. Gabhāsti (light goer) is the light goer, because 'ga' is 'gami' added with the suffix 'ḍa', meaning to go. Bhāsa shines.
