"The word 'is' also has the meaning of 'also'. 'Because of confusion' is said from the reason. It is confused depending on the differences such as burning. 'The meaning of the reason and subsequent connection' refers to the common dharmas such as substances that have not been distinguished. 'The differences are' refers to smoke itself and so on. Those are also called differences because they depend on the commonality of substances themselves that have not been distinguished, but not because they depend on the uncommon self-nature. 'Then, because it abides in both', it means that all connections abide in both. Moreover, it applies without distinction to things that have a relationship. Moreover, from that, just as there is no difference for things that truly have, for things that have, the reason and the thing with reason will not change either. Even so, the commonality of the reason will be understood, and the difference of the thing with reason will also be understood, because the connection is without difference. Those who have a single connection as their basis are non-different dharmas, like those who have. The reason and the thing with reason are also like that. It is a seeming nature. 'If the connection abides in both', it means that the connection does not abide in both, because not having it will not arise is the connection, and that only applies to the reason, not to the thing with reason. It shows that on the premise of admitting that it abides in both, one must answer to having simultaneous arising. 'Like the basis and the dependent', the connection between the reason and the thing with reason applies there like the basis and the dependent, not like those who have. Whenever 'the basis' etc., the dharma to be depended on exists depending on the basis. The dharma of the basis is what makes the dependent exist. Even if the basis and the dependent are the same basis of connection, it is not that there is no difference in dharma, therefore it is said to be uncertain. Similarly, whenever there is no etc., it means that the reason and the thing with reason do not become mutual dharmas. Through 'truly having' etc., it is said that things that truly have and things with reason are not the same. Through 'like that' etc., the basis of a single connection is not all.

It should be made clear, and the previously stated should be established as the sole object of understanding and comprehension. In this way, if there is no sign and no thing signified, there will be no necessary connection. Moreover, it must be understood through these two certainties: "It exists only in the sign, and not in the thing signified." If this is done, then why is it necessary to determine that "the thing signified is only changing"? If the sign exists anywhere, then the thing signified will also change there, and the thing signified exists elsewhere, this should not be refuted, because the determination itself is a fruit that merely distinguishes what does not exist in the sign. Furthermore, it can also be said that "there is no necessary connection in the thing signified," because it clearly shows that it also exists in other things besides the sign. Just as fire itself only turns into smoke, so too do substances themselves, and so on. Therefore, smoke enables one to understand them, but not burning, and so on, because they do not exist only in smoke. What is said, "Therefore, reason," and so on, and "another exists in the thing signified itself," this should also be clarified, that it exists completely in the sign itself, in order to understand that the thing signified does not turn into something other than the sign. The thing signified should not be refuted as existing outside the sign. Just as smoke only turns into fire, so too do the characteristics of gray, and so on. Therefore, they are also things that enable one to understand, but not substances themselves, and so on, because they do not exist only in fire. What is said, "Therefore, reason," and so on. In this way, and so on, explains the latter half. If a similar thing existed previously, then, in the statement "the sign exists in the thing signified," it has been stated that the sign exists in the thing signified, and here, if from the statement "the thing signified will only turn into a sign," it must be said that the thing signified exists in the sign, then how can this not be contradictory? This error does not exist, because the sign and the thing signified are essentially the same basis, just as the sign will turn into the thing signified, so too will the sign turn into another thing. The determination is reversed.
