It is determined by words. Only in that way can it be established. By "because of what," etc., it shows that valid cognition is closely useful for the affairs of the wise. Otherwise, determining that it has no close use for it becomes meaningless. For what is to be measured, there are also things to be abandoned and things to be accepted here. Because understanding it depends on valid cognition, therefore striving to establish valid cognition is fruitful, this is his idea. Here some say: valid cognitions are all established by themselves. Others who follow their sect recite the verses: If valid cognitions and their actions, are already well-known, then for the definition of valid cognition, there is no need to know its use. Therefore, to refute it, it is said: "Because there are also many inverted understandings here." The word "also" is used to introduce the phrase "because of what." Contradictory understandings are inverted understandings, because they make mutually contradictory definitions. If the definition of "this is valid cognition" has not been established, and it becomes valid cognition from itself, then the definers would not make mutually contradictory definitions. Moreover, when valid cognition arises, the nature of valid cognition is established, therefore the definers would only make one definition. Those who give names also have inverted understandings, that is, inverted understandings, those who cling to non-valid cognition as valid cognition, this is its meaning. Thus, it is seen that some people who follow similar valid cognitions are being deceived. If everything were established as valid cognition, then no one would be deceived. Therefore, from itself, that is, from the self-awareness of valid cognition, it merely becomes the establishment of its own nature. Having the nature of being able to obtain the object that is capable of doing what is desired, that is, whatever is valid cognition itself, it is merely existence, initially it will be determined by the involvement of other valid cognitions, the object of action of what should be accomplished, which is completely seen by valid cognition. In later times, again and again, the clarity of some of the known appearances is determined and accustomed to be valid cognition itself by the involvement of later valid cognitions, therefore the wise do not have the involvement of later valid cognitions.

Moreover, just like that, the self-nature of other things, merely by correctly recognizing it, can be determined as valid cognition. It is like the distinction of gems and so forth that have not been damaged, due to familiarity. Therefore, since there are many who have wrong views about valid cognition, it is said that the treatise is to eliminate their wrong views as a measure. Among these, there are four wrong views regarding the result, self-nature, object, and number. Now, to eliminate the wrong view regarding number, it is said, "Direct perception and inference," and so forth. If it is said that when establishing valid cognition, establishing number and so forth is meaningless, then it is not so, because the main point of the discussion is to dispel wrong views about valid and invalid cognition. If the wrong view about number is not eliminated, and only the self-nature of direct perception and inference is established, then the opponent will think like this: "Regarding the object of this, we certainly have wrong views, but it is not the object of other valid cognitions that we acknowledge." Then, what else is needed to refute their faults? If that is the case, just as the self-nature of direct perception and inference is only different from the self-nature we desire, if they are also merely existent, then there will be doubt that this has not been established. Therefore, number must be established. If the object of activity is not established, then when will grasping a non-object become valid cognition? At that time, it will deceive it, and similarly, regarding its own object, it will also be understood as non-valid cognition, so the object must be established. If it is not established that "the result is not something other than valid cognition," then valid cognition will lose its own nature as valid cognition. In this way, the result is temporarily determined as the nature of understanding meaning, otherwise it would not be possible to be a result. Therefore, the nature of understanding is the result. Therefore, when something different from the nature of knowledge is valid cognition, then that is not knowledge.
