It transforms into its own nature. The nature that is not knowledge will also not transform into the nature of the measure itself, just like form and so on. This is the determination of the result. Therefore, determining ice and so on is not meaningless. The word "and" is used to indicate that both have equal power in their own realms. What is the meaning of this statement? What? "Perception and inference are valid cognitions." This statement is to establish that perception and inference are the two valid cognitions. Perception and inference are only valid cognitions, not one valid cognition, nor many valid cognitions. Or, perception and inference are to be established as valid cognitions, perception and inference are only valid cognitions, not non-valid cognitions. What will happen from that? If it is the first thought, then this statement has no result, because they have already been established as two. Because from the perspective of perception and inference being two, no one will understand it in reverse. But if it is the second thought, then it will become that the number is not determined, and in that case, what one wants to establish, that "only two kinds of valid cognitions" will not be established. This is also establishing what has already been established, because they have already been established as valid cognitions. Or, if this is said to the Charvakas, even then, it is only establishing what has already been established relative to perception. This is not a fault, because here there are two statements, namely "perception and inference" is one statement, and "are valid cognitions" is the second statement. It can also be explained in this way, meaning only valid cognitions, not multiple valid cognitions and one valid cognition. Therefore, in the commentary, it is definitely pointed out that "only two." Because this statement has the effect of excluding others, even without the word "only," its meaning can be obtained. In this way, this statement establishes that "only two kinds of valid cognitions." What are those two? When there is a question of doubt, one should say "perception and inference." Perception and inference are the two valid cognitions, not others.

This is what is called "only that." For this explanation, there will be no occasion for the faults mentioned earlier. If asked, 'How is it understood that valid cognition is neither one nor many?' Firstly, it will not be one, because inference is also a valid cognition. Otherwise, the establishment of 'this is a valid cognition, this is not a valid cognition' will not occur. Therefore, by observing the deceptive and non-deceptive aspects of the appearance of some knowledge, it is determined that other knowledge of the same kind is also non-deceptive, or it is determined to be another, thereby establishing valid cognition and non-valid cognition, otherwise it is not. How can it be completely determined from what is seen that is in accordance with the Dharma? This also does not go beyond the scope of what is to be inferred. Furthermore, if inference is not a valid cognition, then there would be no writing of treatises, because treatises are written for others to understand the meaning, and what others understand can only be understood through inference, because direct perception is only the object of the body. The body itself is not wisdom, and even if it is established, there will be hesitation in analyzing wisdom. This, which is related to others, cannot be understood by the direct perception of an individual alone. This is actually slandering inference, and denying the afterlife, etc., should not be done through direct perception, because it is only the object of things. This also depends on the power of meaning. If there is no dependence, then it would lead to occurring on obscured things, etc. Therefore, it should also be admitted that inference is a valid cognition. Therefore, valid cognition is not only one. As for being many, is it because the objects are many, or because multiple valid cognitions can operate on one object? Firstly, it is not because the objects are many, because the reason has been stated here. Because there are two characteristics, measurable, etc. There is no explanation of them, etc. Among them, the self-characteristic is the ability to accomplish the meaning, that is the thing. The general characteristic is the opposite of that. If so, then for those with eye ailments, the hair seen, etc.
