Those are not their own characteristics, because they do not have the ability to act on matters that need to be accomplished, such as hair. Nor is it a common characteristic, because it appears distinctly and separately. If those become other measures, this is not a fault, because this is the observation for those who apply names to things and are attached to objects. For those with cataracts, etc., the objects are hair, etc., and for the appearances of their own consciousness, they have no intention of those as objects. If non-things generally do not become common characteristics, because they are not things that should be clung to as objects, that is not the case, because they are more attached to what is knowable, and therefore they are also more inclined to be objects. Moreover, when, like non-things, hair, etc., seen by those with cataracts, etc., are held by other consciousnesses as knowable, then it is only desired to be the nature of the common characteristic. For which consciousness those appear as distinct, because it does not hold those as knowable, therefore it is only said that those are not the nature of the common characteristic. If those are not things, how can they appear clearly? Because it is the nature of consciousness, it is the reason for its own self-characteristic. When the knowing consciousness says, "This is an object," for star-hairs, etc., similar to hair, etc., then those that appear unclearly with the aspect of a common characteristic are established as the nature of the common characteristic. If those are things because they are the nature of consciousness, then it would be too much to become a common characteristic, if that is the case, it is also accepted that it is its own self-characteristic, therefore there is no fault. That is the nature of having a common characteristic, it is established in relation to the object, and the knowing wisdom that arises from relying on things that are different from other things, with an undifferentiated aspect, only sees from those as if there is no difference, therefore the aspect understood by consciousness is established as the common characteristic of things. For this very reason, this is also not a thing, because it is not its nature for clinging to the nature of external objects. If that is the case, the common characteristic is separated from all abilities, then it will become only unmeasurable, because it is not measurable, then the teacher

If someone asks: Precisely because there are other objects of measurement besides the characteristics of self and general, so it is said that there are two kinds of objects, how is this so? Answer: This is indeed true, whatever is closely needed for the purpose of a person, only the self-characteristic is the object of measurement. If the teacher says that there are two kinds of objects, it is because they can only be known through self-nature and other-nature. Because the thing itself is known by the self-nature through direct perception, so the only object of measurement is the self-characteristic. Only through inference, the resulting general appearance, is the nature of the part to be taken, and it can be known through the other-nature's special attachment to the thing, so the two are the general appearance. If someone asks: How can the self-characteristic be known through the other-nature? Answer: Because outside the conceptualization of inference, the separately appearing part, even if it is not the self-characteristic, is also attached to as the self-characteristic itself. Therefore, the person who pursues the purpose only focuses on the self-characteristic. Otherwise, if the general appearance is fully utilized by inference, then the person who pursues the purpose will only focus on the general appearance. If the vase is completely cut off, and one abides in the cognition of the vase, then the person who pursues the purpose will not focus on the vase, or will only not focus on the vase, because the general appearance has no close need in any aspect. Through inference, one obtains the self-characteristic, thereby obtaining the purpose that needs to be accomplished through it, therefore it should be understood as a special attachment to the thing of inference. Direct perception can also only be known through the other-nature, this is a distinction, that is, inference grasps things through the similar common other-nature, while direct perception grasps things through the non-common other-nature. Therefore, in order to know through the common and non-common other-nature, it is said that there are two kinds of objects of measurement. Just like consciousness, things are not correctly known from themselves, but the self-awareness part of the consciousness with the image of things is the correct knowledge of things. When the appearance of things is experienced in consciousness, it is thought that things are known, therefore external
