That knowledge which does not come from anything else is direct perception, just like the knowledge of forms and the knowledge of pleasure, etc. This eliminates mistaken knowledge, such as the knowledge of silver in a mirage. That is called 'knowledge of silver,' but it does not arise from silver; it is produced only by the mirage. This also clarifies conventional knowledge. For example, 'knowledge of a pot' is referred to as knowledge of a pot, but it does not arise from the pot, etc., because those are merely conventionally existent and therefore not causes. It arises only from those who truly cling to forms, etc. This also eliminates inferential knowledge, which arises from the knowledge of smoke and related memories, but not solely from fire. It arises only from that; it is not that it does not arise. This is also considered important here. Having established it in this way, this needs to be refuted and examined: Is this certainty dependent on conditions? Or is it dependent on the object? If so, what is the problem? There are faults in both positions. For the moment, assuming the former certainty, it is said, 'From that meaning, everything.' This means that if 'from that,' etc., is merely an explanation of this kind. Then, since the reason for distinguishing knowledge is the object, 'from that' means the proximity of the object, so is it not without doubt that it clings only to the object? So, where does the doubt come from? If 'from that' means the four conditions, then you have not fully examined here the meaning of 'everything should be said,' because here, due to the nature of all dharmas, only the objective condition is expressed by the word 'everything.' So, how is it now the nature of all dharmas? Because the object is 'all dharmas.' Because that is its definition. Furthermore, it is also unnecessary to express with 'from that' the cause of the condition of knowledge as the nature of all dharmas. Therefore, it is only the objective condition.

It should be understood that this is explained by the word "all." Moreover, this meaning also changes, if one speaks of the causes and conditions of the nature of all dharmas, or if one speaks of the object as a condition, then it is as extensive as that. Therefore, this should not be disputed. If it is said that knowledge is to be indicated by being connected with the objective condition, then it does not arise from that alone. Then, if asked, 'What is it?' the answer is: it also arises from other conditions. Because it is said (in the sutra): 'The four are mind and mental factors.' Therefore, it should be clearly explained that in the aspect of determining the conditions, it contradicts the tenets of one's own school. Speaking with the assumption of determining the object, 'What is the object?' and so on. For this, (the sutra) says that the definition is very pervasive. The so-called 'merely an object,' here, when at that time, the appearance of forms, etc., that are close, is because it is the object of the respective consciousnesses, so it should be expressed by the word 'object.' The word 'merely' is used to distinguish other objects. Knowledge such as memory is also named by forms, etc., for example: 'remembering form,' 'wanting sour taste,' 'inferring fire,' and so on. It also does not depend on other objects, therefore, that is also direct perception. Although it may change here, the knowledge that has an object to be inferred does not arise merely from fire, but also arises from understanding the connection with the pervasive nature of phenomena. Therefore, if asked, 'Why is there such a fault?' the answer is: 'Knowledge of fire,' and so on. Even if it may also arise from other meanings, even so, those other meanings are not the object of that, and also because it arises without depending on other objects, so that will not become direct perception. Then, if it is said, if the knowledge is named by which object, if it arises from that object, then it is, if it does not arise from that object, then it is not, is it not also desired to manifest this determination here? Memory, etc., do not arise from the object that names them, because that object no longer exists. If asked, 'Is that object not existent?' the answer is: that object is non-existent. Because it is desired to arise from that object even through indirect means. Otherwise, how should this be applied? In order to establish what is being argued, the knowledge of inference must also be excluded from here, in connection with the knowledge of smoke.
