So, what reason is there to doubt that those which are to be explained for the purpose of refuting it are direct perception? Because they are close to direct perception. Therefore, because the subtle distinctions of the time of arising are difficult to understand, there is no approximate simile, and some will think that these are only direct perceptions. Some also see inverted cognitions, such as the cognition of conventionally existent things like a pot, and the cognition of water, etc., in mirages, etc., just as these are only direct perceptions. In this way, in order to distinguish the cognition of water, etc., in mirages, etc., the distinction is made by particularly emphasizing the definition of direct perception as "non-deceptive." If it is said that this is for the purpose of refuting the cognition arising from harming the senses, it is not so. Because it is merely grasping what accords with the object, it is for the purpose of refuting the cognition of two moons, etc., which arise from the absence of an object. Otherwise, the cognition arising from the senses themselves should be stated. Cognitions such as inference, etc., are only established as engaging through the power of remembering previously experienced signs and also as being non-direct perception. Even if it is established as non-direct perception, what is approximated here is for the purpose of proving that the previous cognitions themselves are non-direct perception. Whatever has the nature of arising through the power of remembering previously experienced signs is not direct perception, just as cognitions such as inference, etc., are; the previous cognitions are also like that. This is contradictory to pervasion. Therefore, there are only three types of conceptual cognition, which are excluded by the meaning of the definition word. And the fourth, apparent direct perception, should be regarded here as being specifically excluded, and not as an example excluded by the meaning of the definition word. Otherwise, the definition would be confused. Therefore, through the word of specific exclusion, even the sense consciousness that is destroyed by the causes of internal and external harm, even if it is non-conceptual, is called apparent direct perception. Here, "accompanied by dizziness" means that dizziness refers to the senses being approached by all the causes that closely destroy them.

It should be regarded merely as an illusion! If someone says that knowledge like seeing two moons is not produced by the senses, but is solely a product of the mind. Then, it should be asked: What is the characteristic of being produced by the senses? If it is said that it follows the presence or absence of the senses, then this is the same as the above situation. If it is said that it is changeable because of change, then the answer is still the same. Furthermore, if it is like mistaking a rope for a snake, then this view will be overturned, because this conceptual thought can be eliminated by the power of analytical analysis. In addition, even if the change of the senses stops, but if the conceptual thought does not stop, then the situation is not like that. Therefore, here too, it is only produced by the senses. The teacher (Dignāga) also said: 'Those things that exist in other forms in the ultimate truth will become the cause of knowledge that appears as two moons, etc., and appears as blue, etc.' One should not be too attached to this, because even if it is produced by the senses, there may be errors. Therefore, through words such as 'illusion,' the category of conceptual thought that has already been explained, that is, distinguished by letters, apart from conceptual thought, there is no other conceptual thought that appears like a hallucination, the teacher said. What needs to be debated here is that, here, the knowledge that can enter the realm of non-deception is considered a valid cognition. Because they say that these knowledges enter after completely determining things, therefore they do not deceive in the function of things. For the consciousness produced by the impairment of the senses, even in some cases, there is indeed a situation of non-deception and complete entry. Therefore, for those knowledges that appear as illusions such as hairs, etc., if it is thought that things such as hairs are real, then it will not deceive and will not become a valid cognition. However, those white conches, etc., seen as yellow conches, etc., by eyes deceived by eye disease, and those clear blue, etc., seen because of long-term blurred vision or distance, are blue in clear eyes.
