Example two. The word "this" here refers to the sounds of actions and things. What is the connection between actions and things, and those associated with them, that is the reason for the occurrence of sound. Therefore, "the doer itself, the one with a stick itself," etc., the cause of things lies in the connection between actions and doers, etc. As it is said, the combination of words, suffixes (Sanskrit: kṛt, Sanskrit Romanization: kṛt, literal Chinese meaning: making) and those beneficial to them, are for expressing connections. The reason for the occurrence of sound also depends on the cause of things. As it is said, "From what quality of things, sound necessarily belongs to matter, it expresses that applicable thing, that is ta and tala." "The cooker, the one with a stick," etc., are also suffixes (Sanskrit: kṛt, Sanskrit Romanization: kṛt, literal Chinese meaning: making) and those beneficial to them. Therefore, here, the connection is the adornment of things. Others say "those emptied by meaning," which shows their own good system, meaning those separated from the characteristics of kind, etc. Just like arbitrary sounds, not relying on the application of characteristics such as kind, but merely relying on convention to clearly express their own meaning, so too are the sounds of cow, etc. Those sounds that apply by the power of the intentional, people use them definitively according to their own intentions, in any place, in any state, thereby understanding that that thing is that state, how is this expressed? Because kind, etc., have not been established, how could they be the things that are the reason for the occurrence of sound? This is their thought. If, why, etc., because if there is not any one, because of the reason of not having, relying on both to apply, then why does the knowledge arising from relying on both, only express through the indication of the senses, and not through the object? In appearance, it is not the reason for all sense knowledge, nor is it the reason for some eye consciousness, so it is not closely stated. And attention is not as well known in the world as an object and the eye, as a cause, so it is not closely stated. Or, mentioning the object is merely to imply other causes. Here, how to explain the direct sound of appearance, and then, for all non-conceptual correct knowledge, it should be completely explained as the name itself, this is too easy.

This is the intention of the teacher. Others do not understand this because it has the reason of the senses, thinking, "This is not the sound of a name" and asking. The teacher agreed and answered, "Because it is the cause of non-commonality." This means that because the senses do not become the basis of the mind consciousness belonging to one's own continuum, and the consciousness of other senses, therefore only they can show the sense-perceptible consciousness, because that is their non-common continuum. In this way, only eye consciousness and so on can be led to realization, but not by what is shown by objects, because objects are not what make it realize, and because it is a common cause. Thus, objects are common to the mind consciousness and the consciousness of others' continua, for example, when viewing a new moon, etc., it is the cause of the eye consciousness and so on of multiple continua, and it is the cause of the mind consciousness obtained after that. This is the intention here, because it is obvious to the world that sound has the ability to express what is said, and the ability of sound to express exists in the consciousness of the senses, indicated by the senses, but not in what is indicated by objects, and the ability to express also pervades what is suitable for combining sounds. Therefore, if the ability to express regresses when indicated by objects, then what is suitable for combining sounds also regresses. Therefore, it is said that objects are not what is to be indicated. If it is said that sounds that follow desire can make all things understood, is that not what is said? Indeed, it is only by desire that it exists when worldly people indicate in a non-common way, but not in a common way, therefore the world only indicates in a non-common way. What is the indicator? It is naming and so on in a non-common way. Naming itself is also the act of distinguishing it in the world, that is, its ability to express.
