Etc. If asked, why does it not possess the characteristics of reason? The answer is, like that, etc. Because this shows that it possesses the characteristics of contradictory reason, it shows that it does not possess the characteristics of reason. Both, that is, the inherent self-nature and the collective nature. In the affirmative side, that is, for some meanings of the self, it is not established by reason, because for the excellent, uncreated self, it is not possible to bestow benefit. It is established for things that have mutual meaning and are meaningless. Like that, the mutual meaning is explained in the treatises, that is, which sense faculty shows the object to which sense faculty, makes it pure, gathers each separately, holds it, that is the cause and the other is the result. Because they are mutually imputed, the result and the thing are explained. Meaninglessness refers to the sound of those who are destined to die in the womb, because sounds etc. cease only when they have not been enjoyed. In the former, it refers to eliminating one's own self-nature. For this, it should not be doubted that there is no pervasion or that it is established as a contradiction, because if the eye etc. function, then it is only selfless, impermanent, or only non-functioning. Because the self is unchanging, it is impossible for these to have that meaning. Therefore, the inner aggregates are pervaded by the meaning of selflessness, therefore it will become a contradiction. Again, this meaning, that is, whatever the affirmative side exists or does not exist, etc., has been widely explained. For what purpose? In order to clarify only the reason and contradiction and uncertainty. Because when expressed in other ways, that meaning becomes immaculate, because it is free from all remnants of ignorance. Only the three, that is, understanding the three parts, is the meaning of thorough distinction. The commonality is also measurable, it is the reason of concomitance. The particularity is also having life etc. Some consider it to be reversible, therefore in order to eliminate it, it must be determined to hold. There, the first two are for doubt.

Now, it is unreasonable to say that "audibility itself is solely the cause of doubt." For, in that way, it also becomes a reason for ascertaining some other things that need to be proven. For example, if someone says, "Sound, as the property of letters, is impermanent because it is audible, like the sound of a flute, etc.," then it is not a problem to respond by saying, "Here, there is no unique characteristic of this sound." "Regarding the various distinct particularities of each," refers to whatever encompasses all things with however many distinct characteristics, for those things, these are all definitively causes of doubt. Pointing out the realms of permanence and impermanence is merely an example. It should be understood that all sounds are considered to be what needs to be proven here in order to be applicable. "Dependent on what needs to be proven," for example, if "being made" for permanent things, how can it be a correct and incorrect reason, and for things that arise immediately from effort and non-effort, what is solely the cause of doubt. Similarly, for other things, it should be examined by following the previous examples. "Why is that," this is a question posed to those who slander permanence, that the universal measurability, as well as the body, self, and life, etc., should be proven, and in particular, how can the characteristics associated with life, etc., be a correct reason. "Because of following," etc., measurability itself is because it follows all things. Exclusion is not permissible, meaning exclusion is impossible. Because non-things are also measurable, otherwise, the meaningless words completely examined by other non-Buddhists would not become objects of measurement. Apart from that, it would only become the cessation of its designation. Therefore, measurability also applies to what does not exist. In particular, audibility, etc., because it does not apply to all things, following is not permissible. If someone asks, how can a thing become a dharma that does not apply to all things, isn't it only as the dharma of a thing itself that it can be excluded from all things? The answer is, this is indeed true, but this is said according to the wishes of others. Because the other party wants to exclude merely because they have not seen it, for example, the dharma of no-self is excluded from things like pots, etc.
