It is said, "For others," and so on. Self-benefit is truly direct perception, while this is an approximation. The word "ni" is used to indicate a distinction. Seeing for oneself is self-seeing. Self-seeing is also this, and it is also the meaning, therefore it is the meaning of self-seeing, which is the reason of the three aspects. That which is made clear by which word is inference for the sake of others. Furthermore, how is that truly for the sake of others? It is said, "How," and so on. If that is the case, then the consciousness that has an object to be inferred is inference, because consciousness alone is valid cognition. Therefore, how is speech itself inference? It is said, "Because the effect is attributed to the cause." By stating the sign with three aspects, the other party will not understand the sign, and from that, what is to be inferred will also be understood. Therefore, because it indirectly becomes the cause of inference, it is said that the effect is attributed to the cause, and therefore it is called inference. Here is a question: Is it only the statement of the sign with three aspects that becomes the definition? What is the purpose of mentioning self-seeing? Answer: It should be stated. Some say this: Because it is for the sake of others to understand, even if it is not self-seen, what is seen by others through scripture can also be established, such as happiness and so on, or like mindless wisdom, because it arises or because it is impermanent, like form and so on. Therefore, in order to know that what is seen by others through that scripture cannot be established, self-seeing is mentioned. Why can't that be established? Because speech is not a valid cognition in the object of inference that arises from the power of things. If scripture is valid cognition, then what is established by it is not established only for others. Furthermore, how can others establish happiness and so on as having the nature of arising and impermanence from the scripture that has become valid cognition, and in that way also abandon having the nature of mind? Therefore, an inference that harms it cannot be applied to it. Even if it is applied, it should also be by that.

How can what is accepted be said to be valid evidence? Therefore, what is acknowledged by the other party in the scriptures is not a proof. If it is not a proof, then how can one state a proof that is entailed by it? This is not a fault. Because whatever the other party examines, which needs to be treated with reductio ad absurdum, for example, space, etc., because it exists, is therefore not impermanent, like this, it is to show that acknowledging one dharma requires acknowledging another dharma. Non-Buddhists will lead some Buddhists to think like this: space, etc., are truly existent, please commit to this. The one being led will say: If they are truly existent, then since they are truly existent, just like a pot, etc., they are not permanent. If this is not acknowledged, then they are not existent either. Therefore, whatever is capable of function is truly existent. But permanent things have no function, because sequentiality and simultaneity are contradictory. For the time being, it is not reasonable for it to function sequentially, because the agent that does not need to depend is merely its own existence, so it should not stagnate. If it is said that for the sake of the later arising result, its ability did not exist before, so it does not act, then in that case, it will not act later either, because there is no difference, just like before. If it is said that by approaching and acting together, it then acts, that is not the case, because it cannot be proven to be excellent, so it cannot depend. Acting simultaneously is also impossible, because the nature of the ability to function, just like before, it is unreasonable not to act later. Therefore, if one acknowledges that space, etc., exist, then one must undoubtedly acknowledge that they are not permanent. It is also not non-existent, this is mentioned incidentally, as a supplement. What the other party sees from the scriptures is not a proof, this point is established. The meaning that is spoken, that is, the meaningless nature fabricated by conceptual thought, is not a true reason, understand it like this.

Regarding the meaning of "is," for example, "sound is impermanent because it has the nature of being any one of the sides that are in accordance with a side, like a pot." The nature of being any one of the sides that are in accordance with a side is not something that exists as the nature of a thing in sound, but rather it is due to the speaker's intention to express it. Similarly, sound is permanent because it has the nature of being any one of the sides that are in accordance with a side, like space. In order to follow the intention to manifest as permanent, space and so on also need to be observed. Therefore, these dharmas that are established merely by the speaker's intention are not those that are established by the power of things. And from these kinds of forms, things are not established either, because one thing will not become a contradictory nature. Where there is a characteristic that is a near cause for a dharma to be established, meaning will be accomplished from that. For example, in some place, one clearly sees that the nature of a thing mixed with other meanings is the same, like saying, "This lump of flesh has horns because it is either a bull or a cow." The rest can be inferred. That which is not a thing, but a nature fabricated by conceptual thought, is not a sign. This is its place. Here, if any one of the ways is not stated, it will be said to be incomplete. Therefore, it is not necessary to explain it again, because this teaching itself has already expressed the meaning. Because, if it is said that the three modes are the reason, then it will be said that one or two modes alone are not the reason. Therefore, stating the three modes is inference for the sake of others. If one states one or two modes, it is not inference. What is it then? It is the fault of an incomplete proof, because it cannot generate correct certainty in the other person. Then, like "what is it," etc., merely stating the sign of the three modes is said to be inference. In the treatises on logic such as the *Fine Reasoning*, the statement of the subject is also shown to be a proof, so the question is asked. The inference established for the sake of others is within that.
