Similarly, wisdom, compassion, loving-kindness, and so on, as well as crafts and other manifest things, are all preceded by habituation. For example, in this life, things that were not previously clear, due to the power of habituation, are like seeing a person with the qualities as described before. Regarding this, firstly, in this life, even if some people are not seen to be habituated to this world, they do have habituation to certain things, which is called the argument of the result. Because following and reversing can determine the reality of cause and effect, therefore, this argument is not unestablished. Precisely because of this, it is said in the scriptures: "From following and reversing, what clearly appears can be completely determined." If someone says that because it has been established that habituation precedes in this world, this argument is contradictory, that is not correct. Because those things such as desire that first appear, since they are unrelated to habituation in this world, cannot prove that habituation precedes in this world. Moreover, it cannot be said to be without a cause, because that would lead to the fault of being permanent, etc. Therefore, if there were no other existence, then what would be the cause of the arising of things such as desire? Because only habituation in another existence is its cause, therefore, the next life is established. The object is also not the cause, because even if there is an object, things such as desire do not necessarily arise, because if there is discrimination of things such as impurity, they will not arise. Taking impurity, etc., as the object, the wisdom that becomes the antidote to desire, etc., is analytical observation. Even without an object, the arising of things such as desire is seen, therefore it cannot be reasoned that their existence is due to the power of the object. Like this, regarding past and future objects, due to the power of universal discrimination, people whose inverted views of happiness, etc., are extremely increased, if they discriminate in a reversed way, it can be seen that the power of desire, etc., increases. Whatever is present and absent, and what is reversed from what is present and absent, cannot be considered its cause, because that would be too extreme. From this, it is also clear that desire, etc., do not arise due to the power of the object.
