A Commentary on the Compendium of Reality, by Kamalaśīla. A Commentary on the Compendium of Reality By Kamalaśīla. Regarding the nature, result, object, and types of valid cognition (pramāṇa), there are four kinds of mistaken conceptions held by other schools. In order to clarify the definition of valid cognition by refuting these misconceptions, and in order to establish that "the two valid cognitions (perception and inference) with clear characteristics can establish," therefore, "perception," etc., are stated. Here, "other" refers to the Vaiseṣika school, etc. "In order to establish universally" means in order to establish universally qualities, substances, actions, genera, and conjunctions, etc. "Like this" refers to what will be explained. Regarding the mistaken conception of perception about its own nature, namely, the perception with conceptualization or the perception of the nature of eyes, etc., which is without consciousness, is a valid cognition. In order to explain its definition by clarifying this, (the text says:) "Perception is free from conceptualization and is not mistaken." That is to say, after recounting the absence of conceptualization of consciousness or the absence of error itself, it is established as perception itself. In all cases, what is to be expressed is what needs to be established, just like "whatever moves is a valid cognition of suffering." Here, perception is what is to be expressed, because this is the occasion for explaining its definition. If it is said, "By what is it to be established?" then the case of defining it as being free from conceptualization and without error is not so. Because by negating conceptualization, consciousness is naturally obtained. For example, just as by saying "a cow without a calf, bring it here" one negates the calf, thereby understanding it to be a milch cow. Therefore, "consciousness" is said. Furthermore, here, regarding what is manifestly desired and what consciousness is free from as perception, (the text) says "consciousness with manifest conceptualization." If someone says, should the statement that is widely refuted by the agent of pleasure, the lord, etc., for what is the nature of the imputed cause, etc., be accepted? Or should it not be accepted? (The text answers:) "It is not the nature of the proximate imputed cause, etc." Here, "should be accepted" is the remainder. Therefore, other statements that rely on it...

Those faults, whatever they may be, are not allowed to enter because those aspects are not admitted. Designation is done as a name. Its cause is the lineage and so on, it should be understood in this way. Because without the distinction of lineage and so on, the name does not exist. The sound of 'etc.' includes sound and mixture, the cause of coarse and subtle mind, which are thinking and observing, and similarly includes the grasping and the grasped distinctions, and so on. Manifest expression is the sound that speaks. That is also the general characteristic, in whatever appearance this exists, it is called that. Furthermore, what is this kind of knowledge composed of? It is said that sound meaning and so on, such as the nature of 'tree' etc., which does not possess expression, should be connected in this way. Or, the nature of 'tree' etc., by being able to connect sound meaning, should be connected with the previous one. This shows that the distinction is established by direct perception, because all sentient beings have experienced distinction. In this way, it is shown that even infants are established as the cause of action, which refers to past craving and so on. Past existence is past birth. There, familiarity with name and meaning is proficiency in sound meaning. The habituation imprinted by it is the ability, following it is following, therefore infants also have it. Therefore, the knowledge with manifest expression is also changing. By possessing which distinction was this done? For the characteristics of smiling, sucking, sucking milk, rejoicing, etc., it becomes sharp, that is, it becomes tight. By becoming a result, as has been said, the distinction for infants can only be inferred. As it is said: 'Like this, in the world, everything depends on sound. For infants, what familiar, what fabrication can be thoroughly understood?' It is like saying this. Having a form that cannot be distinguished from letters, and also the difference of sound, only completely appearing internally, appearing like an external meaning, by which later mastering of symbols becomes proficient, that also arises close to those.
