Whatever is determined to be produced first from something, it is not also produced first from something other than that, because it would fall into the fault of being without a cause, like smoke from something that is not fire. When the eye consciousness arises first, since it must depend on the subsequent attention, it can be determined that the mere sense organ itself is not the cause of space here. If it is not so, then falling into the fault of being without a cause is a damaging measure. The view of so-called "consciousness" is also not established, because it cannot independently act on things not perceived by the senses, otherwise it would lead to the fault of the non-existence of the blind and the deaf, etc. Even if it can act, it should be explained whether it is conceptual or non-conceptual. To this, first of all, the first view is not established, because when concepts operate, everything operates in the form of expressing sound, because it always experiences the form of inner expression. Is the form of the expressing sound of concepts due to indicating conventional meanings, or because it is the nature of the Dharma of knowing the essence of sound, so it has the nature of expressing like the essence of concepts? Or is it because of grasping the meaning related to sound? These should be examined. To this, first of all, the view that "it comes from grasping conventional meanings" is not established, because conventional meanings have not been grasped before. The second view is also not established, because there are two kinds of nature of sound: the nature of self-characteristic and the nature of general characteristic. To this, first of all, whatever is the essence of self-characteristic, because it is not an expresser, so merely following its form, knowledge is not conceptual. This is also not the Dharma recognized as the nature of knowledge, because it appears as an external essence like blue, etc. If it is not so, then blue, etc. will also become the Dharma nature of knowledge, because there is no difference. Therefore, it will only become various kinds of consciousness, not the essence of completely transformed elements. Or it is the view of knowledge with images.

Is it not the case that phenomena such as blue appear as the nature of consciousness, appearing as the essence of external objects? If you ask why it is said that it will not become a phenomenon of consciousness because it appears as the essence of external objects, that is indeed true. However, it is not correct to establish that this consciousness belongs to the self-nature, merely because consciousness appears in this way due to the transformation of the meaning of external objects. Then what should be said? It should be said that it is the external object itself, because that is its nature. Consciousness is merely a temporary phenomenon that is closely accomplished by that meaning. Therefore, the nature of sound, which is the self-characteristic of itself, is not expressive, nor is this a phenomenon of the nature of consciousness. If the nature of the general characteristic is expressive, even so, this is not a phenomenon of the nature of consciousness, because it is the self-characteristic of the external object that can be determined by the ear, and it is applied only to this, not to the nature of consciousness. A generality that belongs to another is not applied to another consciousness, because that would be too extreme. If that were the case, then a cow would also be applied to a horse, and so on. If the phenomenon of the self-characteristic of sound is not grasped, it is also not possible to apply that phenomenon to the nature of what is expressive, because phenomena are dependent on others of the subject, and therefore cannot be arbitrarily accepted or rejected. Discrimination also cannot grasp the subject of the self-characteristic of itself, because its object is the general characteristic. Therefore, it can be established that discriminations arise from the awakening of habitual tendencies that have been influenced by experiencing their own characteristics since beginningless time. It is also not correct from the point of view of grasping objects with sound, because there is no sound in the object, nor is it its nature, because this would lead to the realization of the immature, and it would also lead to the inability to apply it to objects as desired. Furthermore, even if there is no difference in meaning due to characteristics such as permanence, discriminations do not simultaneously grasp all aspects, but rather separately determine one aspect by distinguishing other aspects.
