Furthermore, some might think: 'The result arises from what has not arisen, and after arising, it will also perish. Since this is the case, then in the states of the past and future, there exist things that are not suitable for producing a result. If this is so, it contradicts the commitment to being eternally existent.' If one thinks this way, then one should explain 'the ability to perform a function.' What is called 'that' is the ability to perform a function. 'To those' refers to the states of the past and future. 'What exists' refers to what is not suitable for producing a result. Moreover, if it is thought that past things, such as causes with equal potential, are suitable for producing a result, and therefore the statement 'from that, no result arises' is not established, then one should explain 'from what has not arisen.' 'Sometimes' means 'even oneself,' and should be connected with 'like others, it appears as the present.' 'Like others' means like the present, which has not become the object of dispute. This reason is not without consequence either. Like this, whatever thing is produced by cause and condition, for what is called 'the present,' any occasional thing is invariably produced by causes and conditions. Like this, for a causeless thing, there are two possibilities: either it is always existent or it is non-existent, because it does not depend on others. Therefore, whatever is occasional is invariably produced by cause and condition, and whatever existence is produced by cause and condition is invariably produced in the present. Therefore, it is established that what is produced in the present pervades what is occasional. Furthermore, if the past and future exist as substances, then all conditioned phenomena would necessarily become permanent. If this were the case, then forms and so forth would be no different from cessation through separate examination and so on. If others claim that forms and so forth possess the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, and therefore are conditioned phenomena, but space and so forth are not, and therefore forms and so forth are different from cessation through separate examination, then this is not correct. Like this, birth, aging, abiding, and impermanence, these four are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena.

Oṃ. Thus, arising causes arising. Abiding causes abiding. Aging causes aging. Impermanence causes destruction. The function of these so-called arisings, etc., is these. Among them, first, when arising universally produces something, it is said to produce form, etc. So, are form, etc., other than it, i.e., different entities? Or are they not other, i.e., produced by an undifferentiated distinction? There are two possibilities. Among them, first, non-difference is not possible. Because this distinction is already established before the function of arising, it cannot function, just like after the time of establishment. What is already established is not a category of function, because it would be too extreme. Producing a different distinction is also not possible. If it is different, then the relationship of this distinction of form, etc., cannot be established. Just like that, it temporarily does not have the relationship of its own nature and characteristics, because it has been admitted to be different. If it is not admitted, it will also fall into the faults mentioned earlier. There is also no characteristic of arising from it, because it arises from arising itself. There is also no other relationship, because the support and the supported, etc., are included in the content arising from it. If it is again admitted to arise from it, then the distinction arising only from it will lead to constant arising. Now, what will arising do? If it is said that it arises depending on arising, then depending on arising that does not give benefit is unreasonable, because it would be too extreme. Even if it gives benefit, if the benefit is thought of as the distinction itself and itself, it will lead to endlessness. Therefore, if it is different, the relationship cannot be established. Furthermore, because that distinction did not exist before, it will become an admission of no result. Similarly, when aging causes change, abiding causes abiding, and impermanence causes destruction, if the change of other and non-other, etc., is observed separately, then whatever faults there are in arising, it should also be said of aging, etc. One's own fruit
