Therefore, it is also unreasonable to consider that the nature of being manifest and non-manifest, for one thing, is both the agent and not the agent. It is also unreasonable to consider that it is neither, because negating the nature of one thing will not occur unless another nature is established. It is contradictory for many to be both the agent and non-agent for one thing, just like the eye consciousness is for form and taste. It is the same for one and many, just like form is for the eye and ear consciousnesses. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: "One knowledge for one." Therefore, the meaning is two forms. So, if sound and so on are valid cognitions, are they for manifest things or for hidden things? There are two possibilities. First of all, it is not for the first one. Why? Because it will be included in the category of manifest things, because the objects produced by sound and so on are not different from manifest things. If it is said that even if it is already known by manifestation, it is still known by these later, then, therefore, it is also meaningless like memory, because holding what has already been held, it will become a fault of not being a valid cognition like memory. For the second possibility, if it is an object of hidden things, then is it direct or indirect depending on others? First of all, it is not direct, because that would be like manifest things, it would become a fault of not being hidden. Like this, because it does not directly produce knowledge, it is called hidden. If it directly produces knowledge, then how can it be called hidden? This should be said. Knowing hidden things by relying on others, is it from related or unrelated? Is it from special appearance or special non-appearance? This will become four possibilities. Special appearance means, for example, because of smoke, distinguishing grass and leaves by name. Special non-appearance means, for example, from smoke, only knowing the fire that is contrary to different kinds. If knowing from unrelated, then it will become uncertain, because anything is possible.

Therefore, all things will be understood. If things appear to be different, then the difference between what is to be proven (the subject) and the reason (the sign) will become unreasonable, because the difference cannot accompany (the subject). If so, it will become uncertain or indefinite. If things appear without difference, then in order to show that it is included within the category of inference itself. It mentions "whatever is hidden" etc. The so-called "its difference is uncertain" refers to the emptiness of difference appearance, returning from dissimilar kinds, which is merely uncertainty. For example, from smoke, only the existence of fire can be inferred. Like this, it is also a very clear inference, because it is a method capable of seeing the connection, just like inferring fire through smoke. This itself is the measure in the difficult commentary of the Compendium of Categories, which is another constant dharma, that is, the twenty-four truths. The part of other's nature, even the subtle particles cannot be mixed. In order to prove this, first explain the opponent's statement, that is, "when" etc. The so-called "whatever has the ability to function is existent; others are called non-existent. If these exist in one thing, it is unreasonable, because they are contradictory." Whatever is said, they will shamelessly argue that all things are composed of universals and particulars, and are of multiple natures. For example, like a jewel that appears variegated. If it is said that "existing in one thing is unreasonable," then how do existence etc. contradict? The word "etc." includes acting and not acting, and one and many etc. If this argument has already been answered with "if one can prove oneself" etc., then in order to explain it in more detail, or to explain other arguments, it will also be said. Therefore, in order to prove the nature of universals and particulars, the two positive arguments are explained in order, that is, "things" etc. The so-called "thing" refers to the thing that one wants to explain slightly, such as a vase etc. If the thing such as a vase is not similar to other things such as a blanket, if it is the opposite of this, then it will be no different from a flower in the sky.
