Faults such as non-existence should be refuted. If the appearance of something else is itself non-appearance, then it is included in the category of non-appearance. But this is not to establish the non-existence of things, because this can be established by direct perception itself. Precisely for this reason, it is said, "Except for non-appearance." If from these, one wants to establish the cause and effect themselves and non-existence, that is not possible. What then? If one wants to say that this is also a term for existence, then to that, it is said, "This is also a term for the entity." The entity of these cause and effect things is its entity, and for it, any term is the term of its entity, which is to establish the characteristics of knowledge and speech usage accordingly. For the ignorant, it should be established that it is applicable there. For example, whatever things are definitely manifested as the result of something, they can be applied to the term of the result of that thing. For example, at the agreed time, the nature of pots and so on that appear after the actions of experienced potters and so on. Similarly, sounds and so on are also the nature that definitely appears after the actions of the throat and so on, which is called the reason of nature. Similarly, for non-appearance, the establishment of terms should also be combined, that is, whatever things that are obviously intended to become the characteristics of the appearance of something, when they do not appear, they can be applied to the term of the non-existence of that thing. For example, the head of a rabbit and so on that can be applied to the term of hornlessness. For the variegated and so on that are considered to be its basis, other things that others want to obviously become the characteristics of the appearance of commonalities and so on do not appear, which is called non-appearance of nature. Because the variegated and so on that are separated from it appear. Therefore, it is not unestablished, nor is it an uncertain reason, because this will hinder obvious appearances, and for the terms of things, this is the only reason. Since it exists in the similar side, it is also not contradictory. When one realizes that the collection of characteristics of existence exists, then what is it to realize the one with the collection?

For example, when one knows that there is a thousand, one understands that there is a hundred, and so on. But because there is no example for this, it is not subsequent inference. The refutation of this is stated thus: 'Destroying the collection.' And so on, because there is no collection other than that which possesses a collection. The cause for distinguishing a collection is that which possesses a collection. Therefore, understanding the possibility of a hundred, and so on, from a thousand is itself born from the sign of the result. Some others consider fame, and so on, to be other valid cognitions. Regarding this, the fame that is indicated by the speaker and passed down through generations is called fame. For example, saying that a yaksha resides in this tree. The knowledge that shows existence and non-existence suddenly, without a fixed place or time, is called thinking. For example, young women think, 'Today my brother will come.' Just like that, as it is said, he really comes, and if that is the case, then it is a valid cognition. To refute this, it is said, 'And so on.' The word 'and so on' includes recognition, and so on. Because those other certain people admit that they themselves are valid cognitions. Because it would become too extreme, because even at the end of a dream, some cloth is seen to be true, so it would become another valid cognition. Having refuted other valid cognitions in such detail, in order to summarize briefly, it is said, 'In one way,' and so on. The meaning is that there are only two ways, namely direct perception and the hidden. However, isn't there another case that is both direct perception and not direct perception, and neither direct perception nor non-direct perception? 'Both' and so on is said. It is not reasonable to mix incompatible qualities in one thing, because that would lead to self-contradiction. Like this, directly, without being interrupted by permanence, etc., grasping as it is, the cause of determining the meaning, that is, special knowledge, is called direct perception. If this is done, 'sound is momentary,' and so on, it is proven that it has the meaning of non-direct perception. Through what is the discriminating consciousness produced, and what does not produce it?
