Now everything depends on being complete. Even so, before seeing the yak, if one perceives a cow as being present, since they are undifferentiated, then the similarity of being present is also considered grasped, just like the cow's own nature. If it were not so, undifferentiation would not be established. If it were so, grasping what has already been grasped, since it is the nature of memory, it is not a valid cognition. If it is thought that merely having a similarity at the beginning is considered grasping, but the manner of saying "this cow is similar to a yak" is not grasping, but rather approximate measurement is determined in this way, and therefore the nature of memory is not established, then it is said, "If at the beginning," and so on. If the name "similar to a yak" refers to the substance of a particular cow that has not been grasped before seeing the yak, but it is grasped by its own nature, then whatever its nature is, that is the meaning of the word "grasping." And what is that nature? It is said, "The self of this is said to be what is grasped." The nature of the cow's whole is the self itself. By its own nature, that is, by the characteristic of its nature, it is grasped, and that is the meaning of the word "grasping." If it is grasped, then what will happen? It is said, "Those who fully understand," and so on. Whatever object is grasped, if the name of that object has not been grasped before, then it will become ungrasped, because objects do not have names in their own nature. Especially for those who say that manifest certainty is the self, it is not appropriate to say such things as "not grasped." Furthermore, if one cognizes another valid cognition merely because one knows "this is similar to that," then it would be too extreme. Like this: Direct perception, inference, arising from sound, together with approximate measurement, understanding through meaning, and non-things. These are what is to be proven and what proves. In this way, the enumeration of valid cognitions will not be completely determined. To show that it would be too extreme, it is said, "Rows of trees, etc.," and so on. The word "etc." grasps rows of ants, etc. When seeing rows of trees, etc., from grasping the first tree, the certainty of "this is the first tree" does not arise.

When focusing on the second tree, for the first tree with branches, the certainty that arises from thinking "this is the first tree with branches" will become another valid cognition. Why? Because it does not depend on similarity, etc. If it is said that because it does not depend on similarity, it is not direct perception; because it does not depend on the function of the senses, it is not direct perception, then, because it does not depend on a sign, it is not inference; because it does not depend on sound, it is not derived from sound; because it does not depend on other incongruities of seeing and hearing, it is not understood through meaning; because it does not depend on the reversal of valid cognition and the object to be measured, it is not a non-entity. Similarly, saying "this is earlier than that, this is rotten, this is long-lived and short-lived," etc., knowledge of such things will become endless valid cognitions. This should be said. If it is said that because it is memory, it grasps the grasped, therefore this is not another valid cognition, then grasping the grasped itself is the same for all direct perceptions. The term "direct perceptions" is a plural word because of the difference in clarity. Furthermore, just as the knowledge of the common characteristics of a cow arising from seeing a cow is considered another valid cognition, why is the knowledge of dissimilar things such as a horse arising from seeing a cow not considered another valid cognition? If it is said that because it is included in the valid cognition of non-entities, it is not another valid cognition, then this is not reasonable. Why? Because it focuses on entities, because the object of non-entities is non-existent. If someone thinks that dissimilarity is the absence of similarity, and therefore it is included in the category of non-entities, then "mutual," etc., are mentioned, because it is mutual absence. If at that time the nature of absence is determined as the object to be measured, then for similar wisdoms, those who want to engage in direct perception, this similar object to be measured is the same, it is similar. How so? Just as "how is it similar," etc., are mentioned, just as dissimilar knowledge is understood as separate from similarity, similar knowledge is also understood as having all the same characteristics, therefore, just like dissimilar knowledge, it will also be understood as belonging to the category of non-entities.
