If it is not ascertained, then inference is impossible to proceed. As long as the nature of the subject is not ascertained, there can be no inference, this is a concluding statement. Why can't the nature of the subject be ascertained? Because the word "this" is mentioned here, whatever is designated by sound, such as trees and other dharmas, is measurable, because they are to be understood. Here, only the dharma itself is measurable, not the dharma qualified by the dharma. This is a concluding statement. If the dharma itself is not ascertained, that is, if it is not certain, then how can its nature be certain? Furthermore, if this dharma is known earlier than the certainty of the nature of the subject, then the effort to ascertain the nature of the subject, etc., is meaningless. All efforts are for the purpose of understanding the dharma, if the dharma has been understood, then what is the use of the effort to ascertain the nature of the subject, etc.? This is also said on the basis of admission, sound is not the nature of the subject such as trees, because the speaker himself has already ascertained the object. Thus, having temporarily shown that there is no nature of the subject, now, in order to show that there is no concomitance, the phrase "measurable sound" etc. is stated. To understand with certainty is to finalize. The word "by" is synonymous with existence, meaning "to be." What is shown here is that only existence can lead to concomitance, non-existence cannot. In order to show this, "wherever" etc. is stated, because wherever there is smoke, there must be fire, therefore this fire exists with the smoke. Similarly, there is no concomitance between sound and meaning. In order to show how there is no concomitance, "temporarily" etc. is stated, temporarily, in the place designated by sound, the meaning does not necessarily exist. For example, if the sound of fruits, pomegranates, etc. is heard in other places, such as in the city of Red Child (Dmar bu can), etc., that place does not necessarily have fruits, pomegranates, etc. Similarly, at the time of the sound, the meaning does not necessarily exist. For example, the sound of the king being respected by Delipa (De li pa) and many people is like this now, it was like this in the past, and it will be like this in the future.

For what reason does sound follow meaning? If sounds are permanent, they exist at all times, and are not different in time from meaning, nor are they different in place, because they pervade all places. Therefore, if it is thought that because of permanence and pervasiveness, sounds follow meaning, that is not correct, because permanence and pervasiveness are the same for all sounds. Therefore, one cannot express a specifically determined meaning with a specifically determined sound. Then, what should it be? Any sound whatsoever will express all meanings. Because that sound is seen together with meaning in all places or at all times, if that reversal does not exist as something to be established, then the establisher will not arise, because it is not understood to be easy, because it is not apparent, because it is permanent and pervasive. Therefore, concluding with 'therefore' is to show validity, that is, 'what arises from sound is not inference.' This is to show what needs to be established. 'Like direct perception' is an example. 'Because it is devoid of the three aspects' is the reason. 'Because such an object is abandoned' is the establisher of the reason. Because it abandons the object of inference arising from signs such as smoke, that is, the subject characterized by the difference of dharma, what is such an object. This is a synonym for 'because of separation.' Although it may be other than inference because it is devoid of the three aspects, if one asks how this sound is valid, the answer is, as in 'offering fire from fire,' etc., because it is free from doubt and reversal, immovability is certain, because there is no valid means of harm. It is valid, like direct perception, this is a synonym. Thus, the mountain recluse said, 'One should make offerings because one desires heaven,' from this statement, it is not understood with the doubt of whether heaven arises or not, but this definite knowledge will not become reversed. Whatever arises and then perishes, saying 'this is that,' that is reversed knowledge. Because this is not reversed for other objects, other times, and other persons, therefore it is as it is.
