From where does this certainty of "having promised" arise? Because what others have promised is not obvious, and you have no other valid cognition to ascertain it. Even if it is certain, why does what others have promised, which is not a valid cognition, make others understand? This is not just clinging. If someone objects, saying that just as one seizes a sword from the enemy's hand and kills the enemy with it, one seizes what others have promised as a valid cognition and uses it to eliminate other views. To dispel this doubt, it is said, "Done by non-valid cognition." This is to show that if one ignorantly takes another's non-valid cognition as valid, how can one generate another's correct knowledge from the seized non-valid cognition? Because valid cognition is that which has the fruit of correct knowledge. Thinking of the sword of ignorance, Whatever cutting tool is seized cannot cut other things, therefore the example is not analogous. In the explanation of Thatness, Nam Phukpa says, "However, why does non-valid cognition make others understand? Because it is established in both, it is not that which establishes." This statement is unreasonable. Because inference through the nature of words is valid cognition for the speaker, and yet the speaker does not make others understand, because the result is for the sake of making others understand, there is no doubt that it is established in both. To dispel this doubt, the doubt is dispelled by "inference through the nature of words," and so on. "That" refers to the nature of words. "This" refers to the speaker. "Does not know," etc., explains the refutation, because words do not rely on the speaker to show their ability, therefore they are not considered valid cognition. So what is it? It does not eliminate the meaning of not knowing. Even so, it has the function of showing ability. Your inference does not show ability, therefore this is not the same, and if it were not so, it would be established in both. Therefore, whatever has reason should be considered valid cognition in all cases, just like direct perception, because it is reason.

The twenty-third examination of inference from the Difficult Explanation Containing Only the Nature Itself. Now, in order to definitively establish the meaning with two valid cognitions, the elimination of mistaken conceptions about numbers is as follows: "If it is said," and so on. This points out the fault of the characteristic of valid cognition not being all-pervasive, and it is said that holding this statement, "established by two valid cognitions," as definitely two is fruitless. The answer is given with "said," and so on, because it belongs to this category. "Said" refers to these two valid cognitions themselves. As has been shown, there is no non-deceptive nature of valid cognition other than valid cognition itself, and even if there is, it is included in this category, so it is not spoken of separately as another valid cognition. How are others not valid cognitions? Or, if they are valid cognitions, how are they included in these? These two are established. Among them, what is called verbal testimony, approximation, understanding through meaning, reasoning, non-apprehension, fame, and thinking are accepted by other valid cognitions. Thus, from the perspective of arising from a cause, "reading by others," and so on, are mentioned. Among them, the mountain recluse says that the characteristic of verbal testimony is knowing the meaning of the occasion from the knowledge of speech, which is verbal testimony. It is said that whatever arises later in a hidden meaning from the holding of the characteristic of speech itself is verbal testimony because it comes from speech. There are two types of it: that which is produced by speech not made by a person, and that which is produced by the words of a reliable person. This is also different from direct perception because it has a hidden object, and it is not inference because it lacks the three modes. Thus, the subject distinguished by the property to be established is different from direct perception because it has a hidden object, and it is not inference because it lacks the three modes. Thus, the subject distinguished by the property to be established is intended to be inferred, but it is not unique, nor is it merely a property, up to the self of the object of the property of its nature.
