The very fact of seeing selflessness without error, through the object of meaning established by valid cognition, is said to be an antidote because it completely eradicates the view of self, and it does not arise from hearing and thinking. Just as the stains are deeply rooted because of habituation from beginningless time, the obscurations are exhausted by gradually increasing the opposing side, not by hearing once. For example, just as the touch of cold does not disappear by merely touching. What would cause confusion? When the knowledge of selflessness arising from hearing and thinking becomes manifest, the arising of attachment and so on is not established either. For example, after the arising of attachment and so on, the power of focusing on the unattractive and so on only abandons the Sugatas. Therefore, if these are under control, their power is not diminished and is not established. Even if these contradict the seeing of selflessness, they are established for that very reason, because they diminish when it tends to manifest. Those things that diminish from what is closely taken are those that become the nature of interrupting the continuum without greatly increasing, just as fire burns when water and so on increase. Since faults and so on are also of the nature of diminishing from closely taking the knowledge of selflessness, how can they be found to exist when it greatly increases? Therefore, the reason is not uncertain. Since it exists in the similar side, it is not contradictory either. Thus, after establishing the abandonment of the obscuration of afflictions, in order to establish the abandonment of the obscuration of knowledge, it is said, "Because of making the distinction manifest." What is made manifest is what makes manifest. What is it? It is understood as "selflessness," because it is the subject at hand. Its distinction is that it becomes very clear with virtues and faults and so on to that and its dissimilar side by many ways, countless methods, many times, all ways. For that very reason, even if Hearers and so on see selflessness, they are not omniscient, because there is no distinction of later habituation in that way, so they have not abandoned the obscuration of knowledge.
