It refers to the abandonment of afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations. Among them, afflictions such as desire themselves become obstacles to seeing the true meaning, hence they are called afflictive obscurations. Even if one sees the suchness of what should be taken and abandoned, one does not fully know all aspects, and one cannot teach it, that is the cognitive obscuration. Among them, afflictive obscurations are abandoned because of directly realizing selflessness, while cognitive obscurations are abandoned from familiarizing oneself for a long time without immediately entering after seeing selflessness. Thus, these afflictions such as desire are definitely followed by the forward and reverse movements rooted in the view of self, but they are not produced by the power of external objects. Because even if external objects exist, they will not arise without improper attention; even if external objects do not exist, they will arise from the manifestation of improper attention. If something does not follow the existence or non-existence of something, then it is not the result of that thing, because it would be too extensive. These are also not in accordance with the self fabricated by others, because that self has already been refuted. Even if it exists, it will always produce desires and so on, and it will be impossible to separate. Because the cause of arising and existence, namely the self, is complete and always near; and because it cannot be controlled by other things, it is unreasonable to rely on it, which has been explained many times. Since the relationship between the dependent and the depended is prevented for existing and non-existing things, it is unreasonable for these things to come together in some cases, therefore they do not abide in the nature related to the permanent cause, nor are they produced by the power of external objects. However, they are produced by the power of seeing things that are not true. For example, if one does not see "I", one will not develop attachment to "I"; if one does not grasp "mine", one will not manifest attachment to things that are not grasped as bringing happiness and conforming to oneself as "mine". The same is true of hatred, for something that is not grasped as being incompatible with "mine".
