In order to show that it would become such a fault. Conversely, having mentioned the ear and so on, it is merely understanding. For example, the sun in water and so on. After saying those, it is said that the sun is in the water and so on. Although it has already been explained that all erroneous knowledge is without an object, there is no difference, but even so, in order to specifically show the image consciousness in both cases of with and without appearance again, from the first case, because the image and so on are mentioned. According to the view of you practitioners, consciousness is without appearance, and external objects are with appearance. If that is the case, then the image seen in the water is not the appearance of knowing a mountain, because you admit that only external objects are with appearance. It is also not admitted that the image has become another object, because that would become the fault of not being able to grasp the sun. What makes it appear that way? The sun is not in the water either, because the sun is in the sky. If it is said that illusion makes it appear that way, then, if that is the case, that consciousness is not focused on the sun, because the sun does not have the appearance of being in the water. If that is the case, the nature of the object that does not appear in that consciousness, because it is separated from the essence of that object, it is established that it is not the object of that consciousness. The syllogism is: the nature that does not appear in any consciousness is not the object of that consciousness, like the form of ear consciousness. The sun is also not the nature that appears to the image consciousness, this is not observing the difference. The reason is not established because the sun does not have the appearance of being in the water. The uncertain is also not established, because it would become a very large fault, in that case, anything would become the object of anything. Because it exists on the side of the similar, it is not contradictory.

Ah, isn't this something that only you logicians with universal insight could say? Like this, the term "that itself" (Tibetan: དེ་ཉིད་) is said to establish the nature of that itself; while the term "other" (Tibetan: གཞན་) is to negate that nature. So, how can both affirmation and negation, which are mutually contradictory, be logically valid for one thing? If one recognizes it as other and yet it becomes that itself, then all sorts of diverse things would become one and the same. If that were the case, existence and non-existence would arise and cease simultaneously, and all knowledge would also become the same object. Therefore, if this thing, which has various differences such as place and time, were to truly become one, then it would become that one, because that one would be recognized, so how could it not be established? In the second case, for things with characteristics, recognizing one's own characteristics is because one experiences the nature of one's own characteristics similar to external objects, so it is said to be recognizing external objects. If it were not experiencing dissimilar characteristics, then it would be too extreme. For example, the consciousness of an image does not experience the nature of its own characteristics similar to the characteristics of the sun. If it were not so, the consciousness of an image would be no different from the consciousness of the sun, and there would be no confusion. When speaking of "the sun's rays in the water," etc., it is mentioned "through...", and "recognition" refers to the self. "Entering upwards" means the sun is located above. "Mind" refers to the self. Here it is shown that: if I do not mistakenly recognize the sun located above through something, then why would I see it as inverted and not above? If one holds the position as it is, then one will recognize that position, otherwise it would be too extreme. Therefore, because it exists there, it enters; because it enters inverted, it is deceived. In what is said, "Therefore, because it exists there, it enters; because it enters inverted, it is deceived," etc., "existing there" etc. are mentioned. Explaining the reason for this, it says: "The consciousness with the image." etc. "Because it appears different from it" refers to showing the origination of things, meaning "because it appears different from it." This is many grains.
