How can it be said that there is none? How can one understand the meaning from where, that itself naturally understands the meaning? Isn't it clearly determined? If asked like this, then it is said "from where" etc. This indeed makes the listeners believe that "this is understood through meaning," because from these (words) the understanding of meaning arises. But for the composers, this is difficult to obtain, because these words do not understand the meaning from the sound. Those people compose sentences only for others to understand, then by what means can the speakers be convincing? To illustrate this, it is said "because of not knowing" etc. Therefore, if that is the case, the side of not knowing has this fault. For the side of knowing, also because he has previously definitely known, so to show that this comes through the power of indication, it is said "if knowing" etc. However, just as the light of a lamp etc., even if it is newly emerged, can make things clearly appear, will the sound also become similar? Answer: Because it is a remainder of direct perception. It is said "because it is a remainder of direct perception." The lamp is the remainder of direct perception, it is a branch thing. When it becomes a branch of direct perception by perfecting the object or perfecting the sense faculty, even if it is newly emerged, it can make things clearly appear. And sound actually shows the object beyond the sense faculty, so it is the main one, therefore they are not the same. Or, the branch of direct perception, even if it does not rely on the understanding of connection, can also make things clearly appear, that is the eye. The lamp is also a branch of direct perception, therefore even if it is newly emerged, it can make things clearly appear. Sound is a hidden object, therefore it is not a branch of direct perception, so it is not similar. However, even if the sound is newly emerged, will it not follow and imitate the previous sound? Answer: Because the similarity is not understood. It is said "because the similarity is not understood" etc. If the similarity is not understood, it is not reasonable to express through it, because that would be too excessive. Furthermore, let's put aside the matter of understanding similarity for a moment, the similarity itself...

To show that this is possible, it is said "What is the one?" and so on. If it is established that it is expressed by one, then if it is examined that the other is just like that because it is similar to it, that is also not possible, because it is not understood that all sounds are related to meaning. Furthermore, if it is said that what was seen earlier at the time of convention is itself endowed with meaning, therefore it will become similar to the other, then it is said, "At that time, where is the leisure?" Where is the leisure for the sound seen earlier to remain? Because it disappears as soon as it is uttered. If it is said that even if it disappears as soon as it is uttered, why will it not become endowed with meaning? It is said, "Two or three," and so on. Because seeing it occur again and again is knowing the connection between sound and meaning, but not by observing it once. If it is said that when holding another similar one, that itself will become endowed with meaning, then that is unreasonable, therefore it is said, "Those who do not understand other sounds," and so on. Those understanders who do not understand other sounds do not understand this meaning when they hear it, because at that time there is no similarity with a different basis. Furthermore, saying that that itself is that those understanders who do not understand other sounds understand the meaning is supramundane, how can doing and not doing become mutually contradictory natures for one? "For hearing others" refers to those understanders who have hearing that is the object of other similar sounds, it should be said to them in that way. Thus, for the time being, it is established that sound is permanent by the fact that expression itself cannot be other, and now, in order to establish that connection cannot be other, it is said, "For the time being, sound is," and so on. First is expression, then connection arises from that, and then naming is done from that, through this sequence, how can it become that for a sequence that does not disappear as soon as it is uttered? It is not possible to connect to something that has disappeared, not only
