And the complete maturation of the habitual tendencies cultivated by thoughts and considerations, as well as the reason for the mind's illusion of perceiving dust particles through windows and the like. Whatever is designated is not itself the cause, for it would be a fault to be non-designated. If it were not so, then the cause of designating as self would be the self itself, and not the aggregates. If that were the case, then like atoms, the self would not be designated either. Thus, for the time being, atoms and the like are not established as a single entity. Because that is not established, multiplicity itself is also not established, for it is the nature of accumulating it. The reason for establishing the term 'no atom' is not unestablished. Thus, having established for the time being that external objects are devoid of the nature of multiplicity, now, in order to establish that they are devoid of the nature of unity, it is stated, 'Because particles are incompatible,' and so forth. Those who believe that gross objects are not composed of atoms, according to those people's view, this also, like atoms, cannot be a single entity, because the directional parts are different, and when hands and the like move, it would be a fault for everything to move, and so forth. These have been clarified by repeated examination, so a separate refutation is not stated. Therefore, in establishing the term 'external objects do not exist' in that way, the formulation that it does not become the nature of unity and multiplicity, and so forth, is not unestablished because the reason is not unestablished, so the term 'external objects such as earth, which are to be grasped, do not exist' is established. If that does not exist, then the grasping consciousness that is designated in dependence on that also does not exist, therefore, only consciousness is established. Therefore, having shown that only conceptualization exists because external objects are unreasonable in that way, now, in order to show that the characteristics of the grasped and the grasper are contradictory, it is stated, 'Without aspect and with aspect,' and so forth. It is not reasonable to grasp external objects either without aspect or with aspect, or with other aspects, and other aspects also do not exist. Therefore, even if there are other external causes, consciousness is only self-awareness, therefore, only consciousness is established.

Po. Some believe that consciousness, though having the appearance of other things, cognizes the appearance of other objects. For example, it is famous that consciousness with a white appearance apprehends a yellow conch shell. As Kumarila says: "For that single birth, in the object, belonging to the nature of another, in all external objects, it observes, at that time it is also at another time." Because of this statement, these three aspects are necessary. However, if it is self-awareness, why would conceptual thoughts such as having no appearance not arise? It is said, "Consciousness is an inanimate object," etc., it is not considered that self-awareness is the nature of the grasped and the grasper. Then what is it? Like an appearance abiding in the center of the sky, it is self-luminous by its own nature. Again, why is it not considered the nature of the grasped and the grasper? It is said, "The nature of oneness, indivisible," etc., the nature of the three is the knowable, the knower, and the distinction of consciousness. Furthermore, if, like the self-awareness of external objects, there is no nature of the grasped and the grasper, would it still be consciousness? It is said, "Its nature is not in others," etc. If there is no such thing in objects, even if the nature of the opposite existence, etc., is one, even so, because they are ultimately different in each object, they are not uniquely existent. It is said, "In the ultimate truth." If one thinks that external objects are different from consciousness, even so, would they become consciousness like consciousness? If one thinks this way, it is said, "With the nature of discrimination," etc. Having thus established self-awareness, now, in order to establish how external objects cannot be known by formless consciousness, it is said, "Consciousness has forms," etc. An image is the form of consciousness. "Because of similarity" means because of similarity to the object. "Imputation" means it is not real. "This also" means that because it is similar to it, it is approximately imputed, so it is not real. Furthermore, if, for example, a sword kills an elephant, etc., and also how fire burns firewood, those swords, etc., are not the nature of the elephant, etc., similarly, consciousness is also an object.
