In order to show that it is neither gradual nor simultaneous, it is said, "Its fruits arise simultaneously," and so on. Others do not accept that the fruits of permanent things arise simultaneously. Rather, they would say that the fruits of permanent things are these, such as my happiness and suffering, and so on. The fruit of space is sound. The fruit of mind is the successively arising cognitions. The fruit of atoms is the successively coarser aggregates, such as dyads, and so on. The fruit of time, direction, and Īśvara is all that is born. These, too, are established by direct perception as arising successively. Therefore, if it is admitted that they arise simultaneously, it would contradict direct perception, and it would also be shown to contradict what was admitted. Now, in order to show that it contradicts inference, it is stated, "If all fruits," and so on. Like this, after all fruits arise simultaneously, if something does not produce fruits later, is its nature of functioning a reversal? Or is it a following? These are two possibilities. If it is the case of reversal, then its momentariness is established, because each moment produces a different nature, and the previous nature itself is destroyed. However, if it relies on both possibilities, then its essence, which is its capacity, will also produce fruits when it follows, because it has not abandoned its previous state and nature. If that is the case, and it also produces them successively, then admitting that they arise simultaneously contradicts inference. Even if it is conceded that it does not function successively or simultaneously, and it is still thought that it has capacity, then it is stated, "It does not do anything at all," and so on. If the reason for establishing the capacity of things is that they produce fruits, then how can something that does not do anything at all be a capacity? If that is not the case, then why are things like sky lotuses not established as having capacity? If it is thought that it has the capacity to reverse, even then, existence itself does not reverse.

If you think that the reason "because it exists" is uncertain. It is said, "All that is not momentary is non-existent," and so on. The definition of a thing is like this, namely, being able to perform a function. If it is the opposite, then how can the very nature of its definition be found to exist in those things? Therefore, like this, those who believe that things such as space are not momentary, because they are devoid of the ability to perform functions in succession or non-succession, just like the son of a barren woman, it is established that they can be referred to as "non-existent." Furthermore, if the definition of a thing were only the ability to perform a function, then all of this would be wonderful. If it is not so, then it is necessary to state what other definition of a thing there is. For example, for those who believe that things such as rabbit horns do not exist, the reason is only that they are devoid of the ability to perform a function. Because things and non-things are entities that mutually distinguish each other. Your thought is that by reversing the definition of non-things, only the ability to perform a function is established as the definition of things. To address the doubts of others' answers to this, it is "If the definition of a thing is," and so on. The definition of a thing is not the ability to perform a function. What is it then? It is related to "existence," it is the term "existence" and "combination." Regarding "not that," there is a remainder in the phrase "reasonable in the definition of a thing." Why? Because "combination" and so on are not established. The word "etc." refers to "existence." If "existence" or "existence" and "combination" were established, then the definition of a thing would become "existence" and "combination." Because those themselves are the occasion for what should be proven, and because there is a measure of harm that will be explained. Or, because there is harm from what was said earlier, "combination" is not established. "Existence" is the connection with something that is not established, because it is not to be benefited. Those who do not benefit each other cannot be related, because it would be too extreme.
