Furthermore, why does the Tathagata not adhere to the doctrine of annihilationists, who assert a single, definitive, and absolute cessation? Why does he not rely on the view of those with reason, who affirm a single, definitive, and absolute continuity? (Answer:) It is stated, "If there is eternal annihilation," and so forth. If annihilation does not follow, then actions performed would be in vain, as the agent would have no connection to the result. One would also encounter actions not performed, as the non-agent would be connected to the result. If the self were of a single essence, one would not experience happiness and suffering, as there would be no difference between the state of not experiencing and the state of experiencing, like space. As it is said: "The maiden does not take (the analogy)." Therefore, having abandoned both, a person with the nature of cessation and continuity should be acknowledged, like the manifestations of whirling, etc. So it is said. However, regarding the essence of both, the state of the person, whoever is the agent, since he is not the enjoyer, would the actions done being fruitless and encountering the undone not also apply to this? (Answer:) It is stated, "The person, the agent, is the enjoyer," and so forth. The person, the agent, and the enjoyer, etc., do not depend on the state, but rather on the person himself. Thus, the person himself is the agent and the enjoyer, not the state. Therefore, therefore, the person with the state is that same, because he has not completely abandoned the previous nature. The agent himself obtains that result, that is, the result of that action, therefore there is no fault. Furthermore, regarding this, what valid cognition establishes that this self exists? (Answer:) It is stated, "Because of the nature of recognition," and so forth. I alone will know, I alone will recognize, like this, because of the nature of the recognition of the object by the sole agent, because it exists, the self is established. By this very recognition, harm is also established for those who assert the non-existence of self, which is imputed by the Buddhas, etc. As it is said, therefore recognition is valid cognition to establish.

Therefore, it is said that the recognition that is definitely held by all the world will harm the assertion of no-self. Furthermore, how can both of these be established by the knowledge of recognition? It is said, "I know," etc., because "I know" means that my knowledge is able to understand the knower, which is undeniable. This is because "I know" is the common cause of the agent. Is that knower a self? Or is it a momentary consciousness that is singular and destructive, as you have conceived? These are two kinds of distinctions. Among them, if it belongs to the aspect of self, then everything is fitting and everything is beautiful, because in that way what is desired is accomplished. However, if it belongs to the aspect of knowledge, then everything is very difficult to relate. Like this, I have known, I know now, how does this mind that relies on a single knower arise? When it is thought that its object is a moment of knowledge, whether it is some that have passed, or whether it is the present, that is, happening now, or whether it is both, that is, the past and the present, or whether it is constant, there are four possibilities. Among them, the first, if it is thought to be the object of past knowledge, then such a certainty as "has been known" is reasonable, because it knew it before. But "knows now" is unreasonable, because the moment of past knowledge is not knowing in the present, that is, when it is happening now, because it has already ceased before. If it is said to be the present object, that is, the second possibility, then "I know" is reasonable, because it is knowing now. But it is unreasonable to grasp such an aspect as "will know." Because this did not exist before. This "is" refers to the knowledge that is happening now. Precisely because of this, since this mind enters through two doors, it is reasonable to say that past and present knowledge have not grasped it. The moment of knowledge of both the present and the past is neither known nor is it known now. So what is it? It is a known one.
