The Seventh Examination. In order to clearly elucidate the "self" that has been thoroughly examined by reasoners, it mentions "others are also mutable," and so on. It mentions "and so on." Mutability refers to the mutual differences of states such as happiness and suffering. Following refers to the substance of sentient beings, and existence, etc., follow. These followings are connected to the essence of the "self." This indicates that other non-Buddhist schools consider the "self" to be mutable by the nature of cotton, etc., and to follow by the nature of existence, etc., and is described as the essence of sentient beings. However, sentient beings are not, as the Samkhya school believes, different from consciousness (བློ, blo). So what is it? "Sentient beings are the characteristic of consciousness" indicates that it is consciousness itself. The characteristic of consciousness refers to the self-nature of consciousness. They think that there is no other essence of "mind" other than consciousness. Furthermore, if the "self" is the only one, how can we explain the two mutually contradictory natures of mutability and following? For example, it mentions "the master of the snake," and so on. Just as a snake, although it is the same snake, when it changes from a coiled state to a straight state, the snake itself still follows both states. Similarly, even if the "self" is the constant nature of sentient beings, it is not separated from all natures. It is also not like the "self" examined by reasoners, etc., where all natures follow. So what is it? States such as happiness have both mutability and following, while the essence of sentient beings always follows. Therefore, this is not contradictory. This is the summarized meaning. The meaning of the branches should also be explained. "The constant nature of sentient beings" refers to where the constant nature of sentient beings exists. For "all," add the word "essence." For "following," add "is not" according to the context. "Those" refers to states such as happiness and suffering. If
