As for what is called "seeing the other shore," those who look outward do not have even a little bit of valid cognition regarding this. Because it is not seen by anyone, it is doubt and error. Why? Because worms, grass, pieces of stone, and so on, which exist inside mountain caves and so on, exist even though they are not perceived. Because existence is not contradictory, that is the meaning. It is not certain that they exist, but rather there is doubt. Furthermore, in this way you should be refuted and examined: In order to establish your own position that "things are without a cause," will you take some reasons (hetu)? Or not? If you do not take them, then your position will not be established, because things can be established without valid cognition. If you do take them, then your position will still not be established, which will be explained later. Why? Because what is established is produced by a cause. That is to say, the object to be measured is established because it is certain that it is produced by that cause. As the teacher Hero (dpa' bo) also said: "Saying there is a cause, yet saying there is no cause, is it not self-contradictory? If one is weary of establishing reasons, what use is a mere vow in this?" Thus he spoke. If you think, "I only apply it as a cause for understanding, but not as a maker," then why do you think my position will not be established? Therefore, it is said, "Like this," and so on. "The reason that makes known" refers to the sign with three aspects at the time of inference for one's own sake. "Word" refers to the time of inference for the sake of others. "That which makes it very clear" refers to making that reason clear. "Established" refers to the certainty of the object to be measured. If it is not so, if the thing that is the reason for being established is not established, then how will it become its knower? If that is the case, then everything will become the knower of everything. If that is the case, how did the teacher make it a knower from the maker? Here too, things are shown by the power of understanding, but not by true things, as with a producer.

Because it does not produce what is to be proven. Saying "because it does not produce what is to be proven" etc., therefore, this agent called "knower" is not an agent. Whatever produces what is to be proven, such as sprouts, that is called an agent, and there is no fault in that. All of this is a response to the debate on the faults stated by the teacher Hero. Like this, the debate against him is this: Saying that there is no cause, then why does it harm the proposition for those who say that there is a cause? That is to say the cause of the knower, and abandon the agent. Therefore, the answer here is that the knower is also the agent, because it is the cause of knowledge. This shows the contradiction with one's own words. For the causeless itself, there is no reason to establish it, because the pervasion is harmed by direct perception etc. Therefore, by way of concluding with "therefore" etc., it shows that the meaning of the proposition is harmed by inference. "Others" refers to those other than the knowledge that takes the meaning of what is to be proven, such as lotus stamens, as its object. "Because it is certain to arise" refers to the remainder of the sentence "when the definite object is near." The syllogism is: whatever is certain to arise when the respective definite object is near, those are with cause, for example, the knowledge that takes the meaning of what is to be proven as its object, which arises near what you want to prove. Things like lotuses are also the same, this is the reason of nature. In the condensed commentary on Thatness, the fourth chapter, the examination of those who speak of beings as nature, is completed. Not associated with arising and ceasing etc. By "not associated with arising and ceasing etc.," the tenets of the sound eternalists are stated, and then refuted. Among them, the sound eternalists say: Separated from the divisions of directions such as east and west, without arising, Without ceasing, Whatever is the eternal nature of sound, its complete transformation is this collection of objects such as form, it should be determined like this. As it is said: The eternal without beginning or end, Is that of sound.
