Those that do not depend on others exist because there is nothing to depend on. If sometimes there is change, then how can the contradiction of acting on oneself be established? Like this, it is said: If a thing itself arises, does an established one arise, or an unestablished one? For the time being, it is not an established one, because at that time, the self is also from the nature of being established, with non-difference, it is completely established like its own nature, that is, completely established. If that is the case, because there is nothing to be produced, where will this thing act? To show that it is also not unestablished, it says, "If that self of mine is not established." And so on, the word "some" is a general term, meaning that it is not becoming one's own nature, nor is it becoming the nature of another. If there is action, then it will become the very reality of the established self, because the characteristic of being established is just that, this is what is thought. This is the third chapter, the examination of the two, from the difficult explanation of the Compendium of Reality. The debate of the essentialists, which is implied by the word "etc.", is eliminated without relying on the order because there is little to be expressed, that is, it speaks of the essentialists, etc. Although the essentialists are not directly implied by the word "etc.", they still adopt the method of asserting essence as the cause to explain. For those who assert that things arise from themselves, because it is contradictory to act on oneself, they refute "it is contradictory to act on oneself," etc., and now refute the essentialists. These people say that things do not arise from themselves, nor do they arise from others. What then? It means that causes do not depend on everything, and do not depend on the causes of self and others. Then, what is the difference between those who assert that things arise from themselves and these people? Speaking of "those selves also," etc., those are the essentialists. "Self also" refers to one's own nature. The word "also" also refers to the nature of others. The former considers essence as the cause, while the latter does not consider essence as the cause. That is the difference.

Regarding this, whatever reasoning is stated to be imperceptible is the object of the term 'non-existence' for those who possess conceptual thought, like a rabbit's horn. The statement that the cause of things is also imperceptible is the non-perception of the nature of the reason. In order to show that this reason is not unestablished, 'lotus-born' etc. are mentioned. 'Lotus-born' is the lotus. The words 'its stamen etc.' are connected. By mentioning 'etc.', the stalk, petals, pollen etc., and the sharpness of thorns etc. are included. 'Various' refers to the distinctions of color, shape, roughness etc. 'By whom is it done?' means it is not done by anyone, because the cause of Ishvara etc. is imperceptible, so it is thought. If one thinks, 'Although it is established as causeless because the cause of external things is imperceptible, how are suffering etc., which are internal entities, established?', then 'for example, a thorn' etc. are mentioned. If suffering etc. are not established as causeless by direct perception, nevertheless, they are established only by inference. Thus, whatever is occasional is necessarily causeless, like the sharpness of thorns etc. Suffering etc. are also occasional, which is the reason of nature. The statement that whatever exists when something exists and does not exist when something does not exist is its cause is also unreasonable, because it is mistaken. Thus, if there is contact, eye consciousness arises, and if there is no contact, it does not arise, but this is not the cause of eye consciousness. Therefore, the characteristic of the entity of cause and effect is mistaken, and therefore it is established that things arise without depending on all causes. If so, the answer is given by 'lotus-born stamen' etc. This shows that the reason is unestablished and that the meaning of the proposition contradicts direct perception, because whatever is said that the cause of lotus stamens etc. is imperceptible is unestablished, because seeds, mud, and
