has been shown. However, lumps of clay and gold, etc., are indeed formed from their causes. Similarly, aren't the kinds of clay and gold, etc., seen to follow after them? If asked, how can both not exist? The answer is: Because lumps of clay, etc., are distinct. It is said that one with limbs, such as lumps of clay, does not exist, because obscuring one part would lead to obscuring all parts. The kind is also not one, because the appearances of distinct manifestations. Furthermore, in order to show that the reason for following is uncertain. It is said, "Even if a person has mind, etc." Like this, a person is considered to have mind and to have immeasurable qualities such as being an eater. You do not consider those to have such a cause preceding them. If you think that persons with mind, etc., do not actually exist. What is it then? It is imputed. Because all persons contradict having mind, etc., it is imputed to follow the kind of mindless beings that contradict other things. But that is not a single thing that truly exists. If you think so, if that is the case, even if there is no such cause preceding them that corresponds to happiness, etc., why is this also the same for this manifestation like an unreal person? Not constantly similar. Therefore, the reason is uncertain. A person is called approximate. Similarly, happiness, etc., existing in the state of fundamental nature, correspond to qualities, mindlessness, eaters, etc., and the chief and the person correspond to permanence, etc. Those are also not having such a cause preceding them. This explains the uncertainty. Thus, the reason for following is temporarily prevented. Now, in order to refute the remaining reasons by way of conclusion, let's say a little bit.

"Because there is no principal cause," etc. Among these, firstly, because there is measure, because it enters through the aspect of power, and because there is a distinction between cause and effect, all three reasons for saying "there is a principal" are uncertain, because no valid cognition has been shown that harms the opposite of what is to be established, and even if there is no cause called "principal," these measures, etc., are not contradictory. Thus, if one merely establishes that there is only a cause, then it is establishing what has already been established, because we do not want an effect to arise without a cause. Merely giving the name "principal" to a cause does not cause any harm. If what is being established is that there is a cause with such discrimination that it clearly produces a definite measure and enters through the aspect of power, then at that time it is uncertain, because even if there is no agent with discrimination, there is no contradiction in producing something with definite measure, etc., from the power of its own cause. It is also not reasonable for the principal to have discrimination, because it is not sentient, and discrimination is a category of sentient beings. Furthermore, the reason "because it enters through the aspect of power," if it merely establishes a cause with undifferentiated power, then it is establishing what has already been established. However, if the cause with various powers is a single different entity, then at that time the reason is uncertain, because becoming like that and following anywhere have not been established. The reason is also not established, because it is not established that some causes enter into some effects by virtue of different powers, because the powers, etc., have become their own nature. Also, what is said as "because there is no difference in nature" is also not established, because it is the nature of phenomena to perish without following. Dissolution is also not established anywhere, like this, is dissolution all of one's own entities being destroyed, or not being destroyed? If it is temporarily destroyed, then it will become destroyed without following. However, if it is not destroyed, then at that time dissolution is not reasonable, incomplete.

Experiencing the suchness of non-self-nature, any merging is unreasonable, because it would become too extreme. Therefore, the statement "various natures are inseparable" is contradictory. Therefore, if the lord is without cause, but due to the difference in the energy of the cause, the nature of the effect, such as its measure, is diverse, and the distinction between cause and effect is reasonable, then the arguments are uncertain. The word "etc." refers to entering through the means of energy. Also, in the phrase "Therefore, the lord is also without cause," the word "also" is a meaning that must be grasped. Therefore, the meaning is this: only when the lord is without cause, can the difference in the energy of the cause make the nature of the effect, such as its measure, diverse, and the distinction between cause and effect, etc., reasonable. Therefore, the arguments are uncertain. In this way, when the clear cause is the lord, then all diversity is its nature, and therefore it will become the same as it, becoming a single substance. If this is the case, then the distinction of measure, such as "one intelligence, one pride, only these five," will not exist. If this is the case, then it will become limitless actions. Similarly, when potters and others make pots and so on, entering through the means of energy is only reasonable when the lord is without cause. If the lord has a cause, then it is not reasonable, because "there is no energy and no action," as has been said before. The distinction between cause and effect is also only reasonable when the lord is without cause, as has been known before. Various natures are also unreasonable if the lord exists, because all actions are its nature, and therefore it will become the same as its nature, becoming one, which has already been said. If this is the case, then from where does this undifferentiated variety of natures, which did not exist from the beginning, arise? The first chapter, Examination of Nature, from the Difficult Commentary on the Compendium of Suchness, is finished. Now, in order to show the absence of the actions of Ishvara, it is said, "All other living beings," etc., and the unborn space, etc.
