The mere is related to other words or separated from them, relying on the expression of sounds such as measurable things. At that time, accomplishment is proof, because it is meaningless, so it is not connected to "mere." To illustrate this, such as "the thoughtful suddenly," the word "mere" is related to other sounds. "Suddenly" means outside of a specific occasion. Because the thoughtful use sound to guide the audience, not out of attachment. Connecting with "mere" does not lead the audience merely by eliminating doubt and inverted characteristics. For example, if the speaker is to eliminate the audience's doubts and inverted views about "mere," thereby generating knowledge without doubt, then he is guiding the audience, otherwise not. Connecting with "mere" cannot guide the audience in that way either. Therefore, in eliminating doubts and generating certainty, in order to guide the audience, the use of sound is related to these fruitful things, which is the correct use. To illustrate this, words such as "however" are mentioned. Doubt is hesitation. "Some people" refers to the meaning. To eliminate them means to eliminate doubts and inverted views. "They" refers to the thoughtful. "He" refers to words such as things that need to be understood. If expressed based on the sounds such as "what if" that remain in the language, then this is not established. To illustrate this, words such as "regarding this" are mentioned. Regarding this, through the sounds of measurable things that remain in the language, the place of doubt that foolish people, that is, those foolish in knowledge, consider, by eliminating it, therefore for the sounds of measurable things, there is nothing to eliminate, which is not established. "Otherwise" means if foolish people do not eliminate doubt. If someone thinks that the audience has no doubt at all, then words such as "the slightest regarding this" are mentioned.

Furthermore, if the listener has no doubts about certain things, then why would they need to rely on the teachings of others? Others ask questions to seek definite meaning, otherwise they would refute. If someone thinks that even if the listener has doubts, the sound cannot dispel the doubts, then, as it is said, "How does the mind naturally exist?" and so on, that is the function of the characteristic of dispelling the listener's ignorance, etc. Any speech that does not have the function of dispelling doubts does not itself have the function of dispelling doubts. The so-called "speaker" refers to the one who proclaims. "How does the mind naturally exist?" means that it will become a refutation. Sounds are used to make the listener understand. If one doubts, in any speech, what is to be eliminated, what is the uncertain point of doubt of wisdom? "Form, etc." is said. The so-called "by that" refers to the statement "form is what is known by eye consciousness." Not having something to do is the function of having something to do. The so-called "speaker" refers to the arguer with ordinary wisdom, meaning how it becomes a refutation. Because these words are only used to make the student understand. Or, if someone asks, for the ignorant, what is the point of dispelling doubts? "The knowable of knowledge" is said. The so-called "by that" refers to the statement "the knowable of eye consciousness is form." If someone asks, for that, how is it augmented, what is it? "Relying on the eye" is said. The knowledge that relies on the ear, because it is constant, must recognize the nature of blue, etc. Like this, for those who are ignorant of the wisdom of Samkhya, etc., what is augmented is refuted by the statement "form is what is known by eye consciousness." Form is what is known by the consciousness that relies on the eye, not by the consciousness that relies on the ear, etc., that is its meaning. Similarly, are all phenomena momentary and selfless?

English

Should its own nature be known, or should it not? Is it held by the mind of omniscience, or is it not? Are all things that do not generate knowledge, and all non-things that are devoid of characteristics, also knowable? When such doubts arise, it should be said: all dharmas should be known as their own nature, such as momentariness. Similarly, all dharmas should be known by the wisdom of omniscience. And non-things should also be known. Regarding dharmas, whatever is imputed to the nature of knowability, such as non-momentariness, should be refuted. How can this be refuted by mere words? Therefore, "such" and so on are declared. "Such" refers to the nature of momentariness and so on, because it is established by valid cognition. If non-things, how can they be established as knowable? Therefore, "non-existence also" and so on are declared. "By this own nature" refers to the nature of non-existence. How are non-things established as knowable by the mind's discrimination? If not, then even a name would not exist for it, it is thought. Or, are sounds measured by impermanence? Or not? When "measurable" is added to the context of "measuring," then the thinker who does not understand the context, merely hearing the sound of "measurable," will give rise to a mind of doubt regarding sounds and so on. If the sound of "measurable" itself is meaningless, then how can it understand the meaning? Therefore, "abiding in such" and so on are declared. The general meaning here is: merely hearing the sound of "measurable" does not lead to understanding the meaning. However, because the sounds that correspond to their respective objects are similar, the deluded mind assumes that merely hearing the sound of "measurable" leads to understanding the meaning. Like this, for any speech, the mind of the listener who focuses on the sound of "measurable" cannot abide, and a nature of doubt will arise. This is the same for the sounds of pot and so on. Like this, can a pot hold water?
