Cows and horses and elephants, these are called things with common and individual differences, and these coarse hairs, called woolen fabrics, are due to the power of their aggregation. If there were no such things as substances, then words and wisdom such as "having property" would become without objects. The word "etc." should be combined with each word. Therefore, each word and wisdom such as "having property" and "having horns" refers to sounds of the same kind. The difference of the limit is only to be understood by yogis, therefore these cannot be covered by the word "etc.". These also cannot be without reason, because this would lead to all things being confused without distinction. These are also not confused without distinction, therefore saying "substances etc. exist" is the view of others. Combination refers to those things that do not confuse each other are reasonable, just like the senses of the ears etc. Words and knowledge such as "having property" also operate without confusion, this is the reason of self-nature. If there is no reason, it would lead to all things being confused without distinction, this is a damaging measure. Answer with "said" etc. If these are actually proving to be reasonable with the reason of being external objects, then because there is no measure that can harm the opposite of what is to be proven, this is an uncertain reason. If you think it is reasonable with any reason, then at this time you are proving what has already been proven. Just like we think these are the habits awakened by the expression of any reason, not becoming objects, because due to illusion, all knowledge arising from sound is without objects. Being called "merely existing in disease" is a synonym for the habit existing in consciousness. Because these themselves are shown by the source of the scriptures, so it is said "what are the sounds" etc. As objects, what are their own characteristics and generality etc. Being called "that is the nature of Dharma" means that is its own nature, that is, things.

The nature of those (ultimate truths) transcends all paths of speech, this is the concluding statement. As it is said: By what and what are names, By what and what is dharma spoken, That is not there, That is the nature of those. Thus it is said. If the knowledge arising from sound is indeed mistaken, and what valid cognition is there for a self without an object? Because it engages by clinging to those different things as non-different, therefore all this knowledge arising from sound is mistaken, and we have already explained the valid cognition for this. Thus, something is itself, but thinking "it is that" is a mistake, like mistaking a mirage for water. This knowledge arising from sound, which clings to different things as non-different, is also the same, which is the reason of nature. If someone says that the reason is not established, then this object to be grasped as a general characteristic does not exist either, because it has already been widely refuted before. Or, even if we allow the existence of a general characteristic, even then, if it is transformed into something other than the different things, then clinging to the different things as non-different is a mistake. That would become "having those," but it is not reasonable to be the same as other things. Even if the general characteristic is not transformed into something else, but even if all the various things are one thing in the ultimate sense, then the knowledge of its general characteristic is a mistake, and the knowledge of sameness is not the object of one thing, because it is preceded by the grasping of differences. When this mistake is established, the absence of an object is also established, because there is no object that is the characteristic of an object that can produce its own image at all. In another way, the absence of an object itself can be proven from another perspective: whatever the sounds have indicated, that alone is the object of those sounds, and not other kinds, because that would be too extreme. These sounds do not have a truly correct indication for any object, therefore mind and sound are without an object. The syllogism is: whatever is not directly indicated for something, those are not said to be that in the ultimate sense, just as the word "horse" does not indicate a lump of earth with dung, etc.
