It is a concluding word. In the Difficult Points Commentary on the Compendium of Thatness, it says, "Examining the meaning of the word 'substance' is the fifteenth (chapter)." In order to refute qualities and so forth, it mentions 'substances' and so on. By merely refuting substances, one can eliminate the ultimate distinctions of qualities and actions, because they are dependent on it. If there is no basis, then it is unreasonable for the dependent ones to exist by the power of others. Dependent on it, that is, what is considered in this way, is considered to be dependent on substance, either actually or indirectly. Thus, qualities and actions are actually considered to be dependent on substance only. As it is also said in the sutra: 'The characteristic of quality is dependence on substance, the possession and differentiation of quality are not causes, without dependence.' The characteristic of action is 'having the same substance, without qualities, the possession and differentiation are not dependent causes.' The so-called 'same substance' means dependent on the same substance. Some qualities apply to multiple substances, such as possession and differentiation. Some universals and particulars also apply only to substance, such as from the example itself. Qualities and actions themselves are related to the meaning of the words of qualities and actions related to substance. The so-called existence of a great universal refers to the three meanings of the words, such as substance. Therefore, after refuting substance, there is no need to strive, and qualities and so forth will also be refuted. Therefore, the result of examining the remaining meanings of the words is that the examination of substance itself is complete, which is what is to be shown. Then, if the refutation of aggregation must be done separately with great effort, then, 'Where is the aggregation, and to whom does it belong?' This is said. The nature to which the five meanings of words apply is considered to be aggregation. If the five forms related to substance and so on are excluded, then where and through what is aggregation? There is nothing anywhere, which means that all bases and dependents are refuted. Among them, first of all, what is to be said is the special refutation of qualities. In this regard, the sutra says: Form, taste, smell, touch, etc., number, quantity, individual self.
