Because reasoning in that way is incorrect. Because if it is direct perception, it is not preceded by the cause of qualities, and it does not appear as long as the substance exists, and because it is observed from something other than the basis. Qualities that possess touch are seen as the opposite of the Dharma as described above. The characteristic of being direct perception is to eliminate the uncertainty of belonging to successively arising atoms. Because it is the direct perception of external sense organs, and because it is to be grasped by oneself and others, because it is grasped by distinguishing with pride, it is not a quality of the self. Because the qualities of the self, such as happiness, etc., are seen as the opposite of this. Because it is to be grasped by the ear, it is not direction, time, or mind. Therefore, this is a sign of space that has become a quality due to being superior. If space is also a sign of sound, because there is no special sign, it is one, because it can be observed in all qualities, it is pervasive. Because it possesses qualities and because it is not dependent, it is matter. 'Unmade, therefore permanent' is the terminology of others. 'Before and after,' etc., is said to negate time with 'etc.' The sound of matter should be understood as wrinkles and white hair, etc. 'Before' is pa'o. 'After' is bu'o. Simultaneously, long and quick, and the doer, the done, and the to-be-done, whatever is called the knowledge of before and after, is the action of the sun, etc., and is a reason different from matter, because it is different from the knowledge of wrinkles and white hair, etc., just like the knowledge of a pot, etc. The cause of this is also implicitly time. Like this, for the time being, the knowledge of before and after is not made by the object, because an old person existing in the later part will generate the knowledge of 'before,' and similarly, a young person existing in the earlier part is also called 'after.' It is also not made by white hair and wrinkles, etc., because it is similar to that knowledge. It is also not made by action, because it is different from that knowledge.
