In the sutra called "Birth," to state the necessity of explaining birth, the youth Mālin says: Consciousness is called birth, and at the time of birth, it is a valid means of cognition. Apart from birth, causes are seen to have effects. Valid cognition will also arise in this way. Thus, I wish to speak of birth. So he says. The so-called cause of that refers to those things that have the cause of that, that is, the cause of birth, that is what is called that. The thing of that is that itself. If someone thinks that it is reasonable for consciousness to have no function, because it does not exist later, but is momentary, then, as it is said, how is consciousness, etc., the so-called accomplished, means that in order to examine the previously indicated things, it has been accomplished that the momentary destruction pervades all things. Like that, like consciousness itself. Because of that, because it is momentary. The connection is that whatever is momentary is devoid of functions different from birth, like consciousness. Seeds, etc., have also been established as momentary, which is the reason for their nature. Because it is not later existing, it is unreasonable for the function of being without support, which is a damaging valid cognition. Therefore, the reason for establishing cause and effect is only immediately after, not the function, this statement is abiding. In any case, in order to show that it is not confused to say that form, etc., are arising, etc., it is said that by entering in a continuum, etc., that is, depending on the continuum, form, etc., act together with each other, and are considered to be the things of the cause itself, as it is said: Without the ability to enter, tasteless, it is not the cause of another, thus understanding the past at one time, it arises from the sign of the fruit. As it is said. However, isn't it true that sometimes smoke appears immediately after cows and horses, etc., even when there is nothing? If so, why is it not confused immediately after? It is said that even if other things appear immediately after, etc., that is, we do not think that the reason for recognizing things as cause and effect is only immediately after.

Then what is it? What is certain? Like this, whatever arises immediately after something is considered to be the cause of that thing. Smoke does not arise immediately after cows, etc., because even without cows, etc., smoke exists. Furthermore, for you who assert dependent entities, why does the argument arise that even though smoke arises after cows, etc., it is not the cause? Here, others answer their own side's view by citing "If something for some result," etc. Thus, for the time being, even if things are momentary, the entity of cause and effect has been proven. Now, in order to prove the valid cognition of that, "perception and" etc. are mentioned. Just as your permanent entity is proven to be an object of cognition, so too will our momentary entity be proven. Like this, when an entity becomes an object of cognition, is it through cognition with an image or without an image? If it is through cognition with an image, then, because experiencing one's own image is experiencing the object, there is no difference at all in the aspects of dependence and non-dependence. If it is through cognition without an image, then there is still no difference, because like this, only the forms etc. that arise simultaneously are cognized, and not others, and such cognition arises closely only from its own previous causes, because it is born only from the self-nature that cognizes it. Therefore, if one admits the self-nature cognition that cognizes forms etc. that arise simultaneously, then there is no difference at all in the meaning of permanence and impermanence. Even if they are the same in the nature of simultaneity, you must admit the cognition of the nature of grasping forms etc. that are determined to arise simultaneously by the previous cause, because cognition distinguishes forms etc., and not the sense faculties. Even if things are momentary, because they are the same, this is no different. If consciousness

And so on with "aspects," both opponents are blamed. If consciousness is with aspects, then, at that time, for cushions and so on of zawog, there will be many different kinds of consciousness. It is also unreasonable for one thing to have many natures, because it is too extreme. If it is without aspects, then, at that time, the distinction of "this is blue consciousness, not yellow consciousness" will not be established, because in all cases, the nature of cognition is not different, because there is no proximate cause. With "in this," and so on, a refutation is made. This accusation is the same for both, because you must undoubtedly choose one of the views of with aspects and without aspects to accept, otherwise, the consciousness that holds meaning will not be established. Because other than these two views of consciousness holding meaning, there is no other aspect. The fault of both should not be blamed on only one. Therefore, your answer to this will also become our answer, just as in the view of with aspects, you must undoubtedly answer that the aspects are false, or because they appear simultaneously, they are determined to be different, but they are non-dual with one consciousness, which is also our answer. In the view of without aspects, it should also be said that consciousness is made by the previous cause, and is the nature of knowing the determined meaning, which is also the answer of us Buddhists who say that consciousness is without aspects, so this is not an accusation. The meaning of answer is to answer. Therefore, in this way, after showing the valid cognition of knowing the cause and effect things, in order to avoid the fault of having done being useless and not having done meeting, it is said, "If the result is intended, cause," and so on. If in the ultimate way, one wants there to be a doer or enjoyer, then, if one admits that it is momentary destruction, it will lead to the fault of having done being useless and so on. Because many are only conditions, that's all.
