If someone asks, is there a small amount of valid cognition (pramana) present? The answer is: yes, it exists. The so-called "clear definition" and so on, is both a definition and clear, therefore it is a special generalization. The clear definition is because it is free from the faults of impossibility, non-pervasiveness, and over-pervasiveness. In order to show that the valid cognition of non-Buddhists is unclear, the clear definition is shown. Corresponding to this is being completely corresponding to it. Whether it is direct perception or inference, it is determined by this. This will also be shown in all examinations. This is also what the Blessed One approves of, as it is said: Monks, just as goldsmiths test gold by burning, cutting, and grinding, you should thoroughly examine my teachings, and not accept them out of respect for me. Thus it is said. Among them, the definition of direct perception is being non-mistaken and free from conceptualization. The Blessed One also said: Having eye consciousness, one knows blue, but does not think it is blue. Thus, the so-called "blue" indicates the non-inverted object, therefore it expresses being non-mistaken; and "does not think it is blue" expresses abandoning the grasping of meaning related to names, therefore it expresses being free from conceptualization. The definition of inference is also stated when showing the basis of inference—the sign (lakshana): Thus, determining that the sign that does not arise in the absence of the meaning to be proven is the cause of the knowledge of inference. For example, monks, whatever is a little of the nature of arising, all of it is of the nature of ceasing, like this, by showing the pervasiveness of the reason on what is to be proven, it is a very clear display. As it is said: The nature of not arising without it, the sign is the basis of inference. The pervasiveness of the reason on what is to be proven, showing this is also clearly explained. Thus it is said. The sign is also divided into three types of differences: nature, result, and non-apprehension. Among them, monks, whatever is a little of the nature of arising, this shows the nature sign. The result sign is like: from smoke, one knows fire.

Furthermore, what arises from water is water. The lineage of a wise Bodhisattva is known from characteristics. This is said to show this meaning. The distinction of non-apprehension is also shown when refuting that mere non-apprehension is a valid cognition. As it is said: Monks, do not measure a person by a person. Monks, measuring a person by a person will lead to degeneration. Now, or someone like me, should measure a person. This is to abandon the idea that merely focusing on inherent nature, eons, etc., is a valid cognition. Saying "I" and so on, is to clearly show that the distinction of non-apprehension is a valid cognition. This also shows the examination of direct perception and inference, etc. Furthermore, if dependent arising is as the transformationists say, is the nature of things, etc., accompanied by following something? Or is it an unmixed nature? What would happen then? If it is accompanied by following something, then the definitions of direct perception, etc., would be confused. Moreover, because the nature of cause and effect is not different, they would not be generating and being generated. Therefore, the two valid cognitions with clear definitions are not certain, and the meaning of dependent arising is also not reasonable. Even if one's own nature is unmixed, because there is no distinction between things that act together, they would not be generators, just like things that appear as desired, and would not become just doing one thing. Here it is said, in "other's self-nature" and so on, here it is thought that the latter part is not like that. Regarding this, it will be shown later that there is no opportunity for the faults mentioned above. The fruit is mixed with the self-nature of others, which is confusion, thus combining the words. The self-nature of the cause, etc., does not follow any part of the other fruit, etc., that is its meaning. In "even by atoms," the word "even" shows that not only "existence" and so on are many, but also extremely small.
