Thus it is said. Therefore, refute the opponent's assertion that the already grasped grasping itself, and the absence of the blind and deaf, etc., and the transformation of consciousness also becomes two entities, and the non-existence of the designator itself, etc. Thus, because the second moment grasps, the grasping of what has already been grasped is refuted. Since the mind is born from sense consciousness, if the blind, etc., do not have the direct perception of the senses focused on objects such as form, then from what will the mind born from that arise? Therefore, there is no fault of blindness and deafness, etc. The yogi's consciousness becoming the direct perception of the mind is also refuted by the immediately preceding condition. The term 'immediately preceding condition' is established as being famous for the consciousness that closely takes hold of dwelling in one's own continuum. Therefore, in relation to the yogi's consciousness that dwells in a different continuum, there is no term for the immediately preceding condition in the minds of individual ordinary beings. The non-existence of the designator itself should not be a refutation of this, because it is difficult for individual ordinary beings to express it due to its arising only for a short time, and because it is not accepted as a branch of designation. The direct perception of the mind is famous from the scriptures, and there is not even a slight determiner of this. As the Bhagavan said: O monks, two grasp form: the eye and the mind that is related to it. If so, what is the need to show that it is not needed to approach designation? If this direct perception of the mind with a confused characteristic exists, then what fault is there or not? This is established by the pure teaching, and that is the need. Mind and the nature of all mental factors are truly reasonable. Mind is the consciousness that merely grasps objects, and those that have changed from mind are mental factors, which grasp the nature of the differences of objects, and have characteristics such as pleasure, pain, and equanimity. By what does one know with one's own nature the nature of all those minds and mental factors, that is, one's own nature, the nature of one's own nature is made manifest.

It is precisely because of this that self-awareness is said to be free from manifest conceptualization and non-erroneous. Some say that self-awareness by mind and mental factors is not reasonable, because it contradicts its own function. Even if well trained, a dancer cannot ride on his own shoulders; the sharpness of a sword cannot cut itself; even if a fire burns very brightly, it cannot burn itself. Similarly, how can mind and mental factors realize themselves? The object to be known and the object that knows are the objects of action and agent. And action and agent are only known as different in the world, like holding wood and rope. Here it should be said that the object of action and agent does not refer to the knowledge that is to be known and that knows. What is it then? It is the object to be established and the object that establishes. For example, just as a lamp illuminates itself, so too, knowledge, from its own cause alone, is free from the characteristics of material objects, and arises from its own cause alone as a nature of great clarity, and is therefore known and established. It is also said that: Consciousness, from the nature of matter, will arise as a reversed proximate cause. What is the non-material nature? That alone is the self-awareness here. The self-awareness here is not distinguished by the difference between action and agent. In the one, immeasurable nature, the three entities are unreasonable. So it is said. The Adornment Maker (the commentator) also said: Action and agent, etc., are not permanent in ultimate truth. It must be said that oneself to oneself, oneself destroys oneself. So it is said. It is not reasonable for mind and mental factors to be illuminated by other knowledge, because it is not reasonable to say that the knowledge that arises simultaneously illuminates the mental factors of other minds, because there is no benefactor and beneficiary, like the right horn and the other horn. Nor is it illuminated by knowledge that arises at different times, because it is momentary and therefore has no illuminating function. Furthermore, if knowledge is not self-aware, then it is unreasonable to be happy to say, "I know things" at that time.
