Transformation. The knowledge that arises simultaneously is also not a result, because there is no benefit and no benefactor, just like the horns of the left and right oxen. This is a complete severance of direct perception in the language of reasoning. Inference is divided into self-benefit inference and other-benefit inference. What is for oneself is self-benefit. Self-benefit inference is the nature of knowledge. When someone sees smoke, etc., and then generates knowledge of fire, only that knowledge can understand the hidden meaning, not others. Therefore, for oneself, it is called inference. What is for others is other-benefit. Other-benefit inference is the nature of language. Language that makes one understand the three characteristics is to make others understand, to make others know. Therefore, language is also called inference. Among them, self-benefit refers to what is to be inferred from the sign (reason) with three characteristics. The sign (reason) with three characteristics, for the hidden object to be inferred, gives rise to the knowledge of the knower, which is self-benefit inference. Some say that it is to establish what is to be established by the difference of the subject (dharmin), by the connection, and it is the certainty of non-existence if there is no existence. Others are particularly attached to fire. Now, the three characteristics of the sign (reason) are to be explained, that is, it is certain that it exists only on the object to be inferred. On the subject, etc., to be inferred, it is certain that the sign (reason) exists, which is the first characteristic, called "property of the subject". Here, because "existence" is said, the case of non-establishment is excluded, such as "sound is impermanent, because it is visible to the eye." Visible to the eye means visible to eye consciousness, but this does not exist on the subject "sound". Because "only" is said, the case of non-establishment on a part of the subject is excluded, such as the statement of "the side with trees", "trees are sentient, because they sleep." Having the characteristic of closing leaves is sleep, but this is not established on all trees. Because "certainty" is said, the case of uncertain non-establishment is excluded, such as "there is fire here, because there is steam, etc."
