Therefore, ignorance alone is the root of desire and so forth, not the body. Even if there is a body, if ignorance does not exist, how could one be associated with desire and so forth? Therefore, even if there is a living body, but it is separated from ignorance, then from the liberation of those who are free from attachment, all attachments are completely separated, and no fault will occur. All of these abide in perfection. Its object is the own-characteristic. The object of these four types of direct perception should be understood as the own-characteristic. The so-called own-characteristic is the uncommon nature of things, which is definite in place, time, and form. This can be explained as follows: For example, a pot and so on can hold water and so on, and it is definite in place, time, and form, just like appearing in front of the eyes, not relying on other dharmas such as impermanence, and the object of entry is different from similar and dissimilar types, which is the meaning of own-characteristic. Then, if only the own-characteristic is the object of direct perception, and not the universal, then how can the pervasiveness of the universal of smoke and fire be cognized by direct perception? This is not a fault, because by distinguishing the non-possessors, making them special, the own-characteristic is its only object. By distinguishing those who possess others, it is not said that the own-characteristic is its object, then what is it? The universal is also its object. Therefore, there are two types of objects of valid cognition (pramāṇa): what is to be taken and what is to be held. Among them, the object to be taken by direct perception is a single moment of appearance. The holding that arises after direct perception is only the universal. There are also two types of universals: the nature of the higher and the direct. Among them, the similar and dissimilar types of appearances of pots and so on, the universal of multiple moments gathered on one thing, is the object of the establishing direct perception. The multiple appearances of dissimilar types and so on are the direct universal, which is the object of the direct perception that holds pervasiveness. The object to be taken by inference (anumāna) is the universal, and the object to be held is only the own-characteristic. By establishing the own-characteristic as the object of direct perception, the words spoken by others...

It is said that the six things are not objects of cognition, namely, things with parts, qualities, actions, universals, particulars, and aggregates. These are not present in manifest consciousness, nor is non-appearance a reason for being an object of cognition, because it is too extreme. Therefore, for things like pots that can be fully manifested, there is no other small thing with parts that can be clearly identified as a whole, except for the previous and subsequent parts. As the Supreme Lord of Reason said: The parts are truly and definitely existent, they appear as such, and some parts associated with them are again without distinction. Similarly, the refutation of qualities and actions should also be understood. So, if the nature of what is to be measured is transformed into a result, then it is established that the consciousness that realizes it is valid cognition. Then, what is it that realizes the valid cognition? What is measurement? It should be said that here, from things like blue, two kinds of consciousness arise: the appearance of blue and the self-nature of the cognition of blue. Among them, since it is different from the non-appearance of blue, the consciousness of the appearance of blue is valid cognition. Since it is different from the non-cognition of blue, the self-nature of the cognition of blue is measurement, and that alone is the result. As it is said: What is similar to the object is the valid cognition here, and the cognition of the object is the result of valid cognition. This is only established as different through the distinction of conceptual thought, but in ultimate truth, there is no difference at all. As it is said: Manifest consciousness itself is the result of valid cognition. If one does not wish consciousness to have an appearance, then, since there is no appearance, it is the same for all objects, therefore, distinguishing and establishing objects is not established. If someone says that the previous consciousness is valid cognition and the subsequent consciousness is the result of valid cognition, it is unreasonable. Because in that case, the consciousness that arises in the first moment is not valid cognition, because the second consciousness that becomes the result does not arise. Even if the second consciousness that becomes the result arises, the previous consciousness has already perished in an instant. How can it be the valid cognition of knowing objects such as pots?
