Etc. are truly existent by their own nature. Therefore, if someone says, how is it known that for a hundred things, vases etc. are conventionally existent? Therefore, it is stated that vases etc. are conventionally existent etc. It should be understood that vases etc. are conventionally existent in this way: like this, even if each and every atom is completely analyzed, a consciousness with the form of a vase will not arise. "Because the appearing consciousness changes." This means that because this consciousness has such an appearance, this is That appearance. The word 'that' refers to being associated with a vase. The word 'appearance' expresses similarity. It is both that appearance and consciousness, so it is that appearing consciousness. That decay is the decay of that appearing consciousness, because of the decay of that appearing consciousness. Even if each and every atom has been completely removed, a consciousness with the form of a vase etc. will not arise. Is it just because of that that vases etc. become conventionally existent? Therefore, it is stated, "For those that are truly existent" etc. Like this, whatever is truly existent, even if the related parts are removed, will not completely abandon its own mind, like colors etc. If vases etc. were also truly existent, then when the parts related to themselves are completely removed, they would not abandon their own minds. Because each and every atom is completely removed, the combination that constitutes matter is destroyed, the vase is destroyed, therefore the mind of the vase does not arise? Is it not because it does not exist at all in everything? What is said here is that if there is a substance with limbs, such as a vase, other than atoms, then when it is said that it exists in atoms, does it exist in those atoms by the nature of how much it exists? Or is it by one part? Those parts in which it exists, other than the parts that constitute it, do not exist by one part of a part. If it does not exist by one part, then it becomes existing by the nature of how much it exists. Therefore,

If there are as many subtle particles as there are, there will be as many parts as there are vases and so on. Therefore, the oneness of having parts will be lost. Here, the argument is that parts are not substances, because they simultaneously take multiple things. Just like not being a horse. Dissimilar dharmas are their own characteristics. If it were the nature of things, then it would be unreasonable to simultaneously take multiple things in the way it is said, which is a harmful measure. Thus, in all three aspects, it is proven that external objects cannot be cognized, and therefore a conclusion is drawn. Therefore, the words "sense powers" and so on are mentioned. Because subtle particles are not cognizable, the minds of the sense powers are not objects of external objects. Thus it is established. In this way, after refuting the tenets of others and negating cognition in every way, since the commitment will be harmed by fame, in order to show how to establish the cognition of one's own tenets, the words "the inner essence of knowledge" and so on are mentioned. The meaning of the sutra is that for knowledge, whatever appears as a distinctly cut-off object of knowledge, that itself is the object of knowledge. The meaning of inner is inside, and that should be understood here as knowledge. The meaning of the word inner is essentially the meaning of the seventh case, therefore inner is said to knowledge. The essence of knowledge is the term for the part that grasps the image of the object. The word "is" should be understood as definitely grasping and the meaning of interval. Appearing as external means appearing like external, which means like being distinctly cut off. The reason it appears that way is that the space element appears. Since space appears in consciousness, it shows the part that is taken as if it were distinctly cut off from consciousness. For example, when the image of the moon appears on the surface of a mirror, due to the image of the space element, it appears distinctly cut off as if it were in a well. If there is no external object, then what is the objective condition of consciousness?
