Whatever is the existence and non-existence of things that exist and do not exist, that is said to be the characteristic of the sequential arising of cause and that which possesses cause. If something exists, something exists; if it does not exist, something does not exist, that is the cause, and the other is that which possesses cause. For this, if the apprehended aspect exists, consciousness exists, and if it does not exist, consciousness does not exist. Therefore, these two arising simultaneously also become established as cause and that which possesses cause. Those who are called "proponents of reasons" are those who apply the term "reason," and that is synonymous with "sophist." That which is called "possessing that nature" is possessing the nature of existence and non-existence. That which is called "cause and that which possesses cause" means cause and effect. Thus, having temporarily explained that objects and subjects are simultaneous, now, in order to explain the objects and subjects that are sequential, it is said, "Or, sequentially, in order to establish potency." That is to say, or when the apprehended aspect establishes potency, it becomes the object of the nature that sequentially produces. For example, when the apprehended aspect ceases, it establishes potency on the alaya-consciousness. If that potency accomplishes things that act simultaneously in the second moment, then at that time it produces a consciousness similar to itself only in the second moment. If it does not accomplish it, then in the third or fourth moment, whenever it is accomplished, at that time, having fully ripened, it will produce a consciousness similar to itself. For this view, there is no fault such as acting on oneself is contradictory, and because it is the same side, and because it arises simultaneously, and so on. For example, whatever aspect of the apprehended aspect, such as blue, exists in the previous consciousness, that produces the subsequent consciousness that possesses the aspect of blue, and so on. Therefore, these faults are unlikely to exist. If potency produces consciousness, then if one thinks that only potency becomes the object, and not the previous apprehended aspect, then it is said, "It is also sequential," and so on. This itself is without fault. For example, the sequential apprehended aspect is also in accordance with itself.

In order to generate a common result, the ālaya-vijñāna possesses the potential of being a basis. If the apprehended aspect does not become the basis for establishing that potential, then that potential will not generate such a consciousness. Therefore, the consciousness that arises from the potential also arises from that very apprehended aspect, so there is no contradiction whatsoever. For this aspect, it is very reasonable to possess two natures. Just like this, the apprehended aspect generates the subsequent consciousness that is in accordance with itself, therefore the possession of two natures exists. Here, in order to reveal the opportunity for the words of other schools, it is said, "If, then the inner form alone," and so on. If you assert that only the inner form is the condition of the object, then, in that case, how does eye consciousness arise based on the inner form and the eye sense? Just like this, if the eye sense together with whatever form has previously appeared generates its own consciousness, and the inner form does not even appear before the eye sense, then how can it be said that the eye sense together with the inner form generates eye consciousness? Because it is never in front, how will it appear? This is the former position. The treatise writer, in order to answer this, said, "Together with the power of action," and so on. If the sense faculty is made of the elements, then in that case, this fault would occur. We consider that the power of the object acting together with the object, which is considered as the self-existent thing, is the sense faculty. Therefore, according to our view, just as form is internal, so too the eye is only internal, so how can there be a fault as stated above? The term "acting together with power" should be understood as considering the sense faculty as acting together with the object. If it is not like that, but "the power of the sense faculty," then it becomes irrelevant. And if one says "the power of the sense faculty," it is not beautiful either. Furthermore, how is it known that the sense faculty is the nature of potential? Therefore, it is said, "The sense faculty is," and so on. Because the sense faculty is the nature of potential from the aspect of its own result, which is the nature of consciousness.
